The county is located in the southwest of Mississippi, borders Louisiana to the west , with the Mississippi forming the natural boundary and has an area of 1,365 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by the following counties and parishes:

Jefferson County was formed from the Natchez District as Pickering County on April 2, 1799 and later renamed. It was named after Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), the third President of the United States.

According to the 2000 census , Jefferson County had 9,740 people in 3,308 households and 2,338 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 13.06 percent white, 86.49 percent African American, 0.08 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.02 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.24 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any of the above mentioned groups were 0.66 percent of the population.
Of the 3,308 households, 36.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 36.0 percent were married couples living together, 28.5 percent were single mothers, and 29.3 percent were non-families. 27.1 percent of all households were single households and 10.1 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.36 people.
28.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 12.1 percent between 18 and 24, 28.5 percent between 25 and 44, 19.6 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 10.9 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 99.0 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 99.0 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 18,447 USD , for a family is 23,188 USD. Males had a median income of $ 25,726 versus $ 18,000 for females. The per capita income was $ 9,709. About 32.5 percent of families and 36.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
