The first written mention of Cunovicz comes from a document issued here by Prince Heinrich Břetislav III. for the monastery Hradisko from 1196. When Ottokar II Přemysl founded the royal town of Nový Veligrad on a southeastern river island in the March, the king transferred the market rights of Veligrad-Staré Město and Kunowitz to the new town. In the 15th century Kunowitz was again referred to as a town.
