The Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe - University of Music is a university institution supported by the state of Baden-Württemberg for the artistic and scientific professional training of musicians, composers, musicologists, music journalists and for music / computer technology.

history

The beginning of the University of Music dates back to 1812. At that time, a private initiative supported by the city of Karlsruhe was the first to set up a "musical educational institute for wind instruments" and two years later a "singing institution". These were expanded in 1837 to a "music training facility", in which teaching was based on fixed curricula with state and municipal funding. In 1910 it merged with the “Grand Ducal Conservatory”, which was founded in 1883 by Heinrich Ordenstein . The resulting institute was named the "Badische Hochschule für Musik" in 1929. In 1971 the university was taken over by the state of Baden-Württemberg and transferred to the "State University for Music Karlsruhe". It has had its headquarters in Gottesaue Castle in Karlsruhe's Oststadt since 1989 . The Karlsruhe University of Music is attended by around 650 students and is supervised by a faculty made up of around 70 full-time professors or teaching staff and around 185 lecturers (as of 2013).
