Until the Middle Ages

Settlement of the region goes back to the Paleolithic Age , numerous fortresses and dolmens in the towns of La Coroña, Peña Menéndez, El Canto San Pedro, El Cuetu and Pico Cogolla still bear witness to this today.
The Romans had also built an important road here that ran along the Río Nora . There are still bridges and fragments of the road that are still in use today. The fort Lucus Asturum , which they built, was an important defensive bulwark in the valley of the Río Nora until well after the Reconquista .

Since the medieval times

In church documents, the construction of the monasteries "San Pelayo", "Santa María de la Vega" and "San Vicente" under the reign of Alfonso III. and Ordoño II. proven. The parish belonged to the Archdiocese of Oviedo .
In the 16th century, under the reign of Philip II , the boundaries of the community were first written down and the community was declared independent. The administrative headquarters then moved from Las Regueras to Pola de Llanes. Until the 19th century the Concejo was ruled by regional families (Valdes). A prisoner of war camp was set up in Villabona
during the Spanish War of Independence . This is where the community's correctional facility is today.
