Since 1992, MDR Fernsehen has been the regional television program of Central German Radio for the three states of Saxony , Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia .

Since 1996, MDR television has been the third most watched television program on ARD ; In 2017, the market share in the responsible transmission area was 13% on the main evening between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Since December 5, 2013, MDR television has also been broadcast in HD . Emergence

Well before the start of broadcasting in 1992, there were legal predecessor companies from which the Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk and finally the MDR television developed. Broadcasting in the field of radio broadcasting was mainly disseminated through these various companies. Already in the years 1924 to 1933 there was the initially private, then semi-public MIRAG ( Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk AG ). After that, the fully nationalized Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk GmbH was responsible from 1933 to 1934. The following years from 1934 to 1945 there was the Reichsender Leipzig for broadcasting, then from 1945 to 1952 the Landessender Leipzig / Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk. At the time of the German Democratic Republic from 1952 to 1990, however, there was no independent organization within the centralized broadcasting system of the GDR; the television programs of the German television broadcasting company (GDR 1 and 2, 1990: DFF 1 and 2, from December 1990: DFF country chain) were broadcast nationwide. broadcast. In the run-up to the winding up of the DFF as stipulated in Article 36 of the Unification Treaty by December 31, 1991 at the latest, the states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia founded Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk on May 31, 1991, with headquarters in Leipzig. The MDR television started broadcasting on January 1, 1992 at midnight - immediately after the DFF had finished broadcasting.

Legal basis

The legal basis for the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk is the State Treaty on Central German Broadcasting of May 30, 1991. This imposes and writes down the task of broadcasting on the state broadcasting corporation. In concrete terms, this means that the MDR must integrate information and education as well as advice and entertainment in terms of program content and should take appropriate account of the division of the transmission area into countries. The program principles explicitly oblige the MDR to promote solidarity in the unified Germany.

The most important supervisory body for the MDR is the 43-member Broadcasting Council of Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk , which represents the interests of the general public. It is made up of one representative from each of the state governments, representatives from at least two state parliaments, and representatives of certain “socially significant organizations and groups” proportionally distributed among the state treaty states. The second supervisory body, the administrative board primarily equipped with economic control powers, has seven members, three from Saxony and two each from Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. A director elected by the Broadcasting Council on the proposal of the Board of Directors is responsible for operation and programming for a period of six years. The MDR is subdivided into a legal department, program directors for radio and television, an administrative and operational directorate as well as three regional broadcasting houses.

MDR television is the third television program for the states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. For the three regional news magazines, the MDR television is switched from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. every day. The main news program MDR aktuell is broadcast daily at 7.30 p.m., further editions are made Sunday to Friday at 9.45 p.m., on Saturdays also later, and from Monday to Friday at 5.45 p.m. In addition, there are other short editions distributed throughout the day, as MDR aktuell Eins30. Regional news magazines

The regional magazines Sachsenspiegel , Sachsen-Anhalt heute and Thüringen Journal are broadcast Mondays to Sundays from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The regional programs mentioned are broadcast via cable, terrestrial ( DVB-T ) and DVB-S .

The magazines report in detail on events in the broadcasting area in mostly four reports. There is also a short message block. At the end of the programs, the news and results from the sports sector are usually broadcast. The broadcasts are concluded with the weather forecast at the end. From 2007 to 2011 BARBAROSSA - the history magazine of the MDR, from 2011 to 2015 history of Central Germany - the magazine, is a television program produced by Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) and broadcast on MDR television. Unicato

The film magazine shows student films from the media and design courses in the broadcasting area once a month. The contributions of the unmoderated 45-minute program are linked by a design developed by students at the Bauhaus University Weimar. Unicato is accompanied by an academic advisory board. The compilation takes place at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, the final acceptance in the MDR State Broadcasting House Thuringia in Erfurt. Unicato first went on air in October 2006.

Awards

The MDR logo in general is composed of a font by Phil Baines (Fuse) called "FF You can read me". For the 15th anniversary of MDR television, the station received one of the most important design awards in Europe, the silver ISIS Award. The award was given on April 20, 2007 in Berlin as part of the PROMAX & BDA Europe Conference. In the “Best On Air Branding” category, MDR television was honored for its new TV design in 2007.
