Farewell is a quiet word is a television program by Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) that was first broadcast on December 30, 2000. The program commemorates deceased celebrities or public figures of the respective year.
concept
Farewell is a quiet word is a pre-produced “reminder broadcast” in which people who have died in the respective year of production are remembered. The people selected for the show were usually prominent personalities or public figures during their lifetime or, through their work and work, made a contribution to society beyond the limelight. When choosing the deceased, the range of activities is quite wide and ranges from politicians like Helmut Schmidt and Reinhard Höppner , actors like Andreas Schmidt and Erwin Geschonneck , musicians like Klaus Renft and Udo Jürgens , athletes like Klaus Ampler and Graciano Rocchigiani , to Trabant engineer Werner Lang and Sandman inventor Gerhard Behrendt . Particular mention is made of people from the transmission area of the MDR.
In keeping with the basic theme of “Farewell and Mourning”, the episodes broadcast so far were very calm and respectful . Since the broadcasting time is limited to approx. 90 minutes, two very different versions of the deceased were remembered for each episode:
Editorial evaluation of the relevance of a person | variant |
---|---|
very relevant for the show | Obituary in the form of a specially produced film contribution:
|
relevant to the broadcast | Written listing of the names at the end of the program over background music |
The main element of the program is the calm and characteristic voice of an off-speaker . He speaks the introduction and guides the audience through the program, from film contribution to film contribution. Quotations, idioms and excerpts from song texts that are also selected to match the basic topic of the program are used - these are often related to the deceased person. The voiceover is backed up by calmly and unobtrusively arranged music (partly also related to the person) as well as atmospheric images (e.g. sunrises, sunsets, autumn landscapes, forests, wild animals, migratory birds, streams, etc.).
Hans Teuscher led the audience through the program as an off-speaker until December 2014. After his death in 2015, Otto Mellies took over the role that he had already held once in 2013.
Every year towards the end of the year, a new episode of the show is created. This will then be broadcast for the first time between Christmas and New Year's Eve. A repetition usually takes place again at the beginning of the new year. The first productions did not follow a fixed interval. Only since 2005 has a new episode been regularly produced each year.
