Coordinates: 37 ° 41 ′  S , 144 ° 35 ′  E Melton City is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . Melton is part of the Outer Metropolitan Area of Melbourne , the outer metropolitan area of ​​the capital of Victoria. The area is 528 km² and has about 135,000 inhabitants.

Melton is 14 to 29 miles from the city center on the west end of Melbourne and contains 16 neighborhoods and towns: Burnside, Caroline Springs , Hillside, Brookfield, Kurunjang, Melton, Melton South, Melton West, Plumpton, Ravenhall, Rockbank, Taylors Hill, Toolern Vale and portions of Diggers Rest, Mount Cottrell, and Truganina. The seat of the City Council is in the city of Melton in the western half of the city.

At first only sheep farmers settled in the region, but with the gold rush of 1851 a larger settlement emerged in Melton, which served as a supply and transit station between Melbourne and the western gold fields around Ballarat.

The city is largely sparsely populated free land except for the southeastern outskirts of Brimbank City around Caroline Springs and Hillside and the city of Melton. Although the city belongs to the Greater Melbourne area, Melton has officially been an independent satellite city with over 32,000 inhabitants since 1974 . The city includes the boroughs Brookfield, Kurunjang, Melton, Melton South and Melton West. Melton was a Shire until 2012 and then received city status.

The first official powered flight in Australia took place in the Diggers Rest district in 1910. The pilot was the famous escape artist Harry Houdini , who was also a passionate aviator.

The Melton City Council has seven members who are elected by the residents of the seven wards. These seven districts (Cambridge, Cochrane, Courthouse, Pennyroyal, Reservoir, Sugargum and Watts) are defined independently of the districts.
