The Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, (short "The Metrodome" or "The Dome") was a stadium with an air roof in the US city of Minneapolis in Hennepin County , Minnesota . It was used as a venue by several sports teams between 1982 and 2013 before it had to make way for a new building.

history

After the major sports teams in Minneapolis, the Twins and the Vikings , were dissatisfied with the uncovered Metropolitan Stadium , a new solution was sought in the 1970s. The Twins criticized the lack of adaptation to the harsh weather conditions of the climate in the Midwest, the Vikings criticized the small audience capacity (under 48,500 seats) and the outdated condition of the sports stadium.

Therefore, a new stadium was planned for downtown Minneapolis. Similar to the Silverdome near Detroit , it should be completely roofed over. After the citizens of Minneapolis had approved the construction, the construction of the Metrodome began on December 20, 1979, which was designed as an air dome . The cost of 70 million US dollars was undercut by two million. The state of Minnesota was the developer . The arena was named after the politician and former US Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey who died in 1978 .

At the beginning of the 21st century, the individual sports teams that played their games in the Metrodome began developing plans for their own venues. These emerged from the fact that the Metrodome was considered unfashionable and not sufficiently adapted to the needs of the individual teams. In 2006 construction began on a new stadium for the Golden Gophers football team . The TCF Bank Stadium was completed in 2009 and offers space for 50,000 spectators. The Twins began construction on Target Field in 2007 , which officially opened in 2010 with a 5-2 win over the Boston Red Sox .

On December 11, 2010, the roof structure covered with fiberglass-reinforced plastic collapsed due to the masses of snow from a blizzard . Before that, around 40 centimeters of fresh snow fell within 24 hours.

Immediately after the Minnesota Vikings' last season game on December 29, 2013, preparations began for the demolition of the stadium. On January 18, 2014, as the first step in the actual demolition work, the air-supported roof was lowered to the ground in a controlled manner, after which the arena was to be gradually removed. In their place, a new building called the US Bank Stadium was built by July 2016 , which serves the Minnesota Vikings as a new venue. Until completion, the University of Minnesota's TCF Bank Stadium was the temporary home of the Vikings .

Events

Special sporting events were the MLB All-Star Game in 1985 and the World Series in 1987 and 1991 . In 1992 the Super Bowl XXVI took place in the Metrodome . In 1992 and 2001, the Metrodome hosted the NCAA Final Four tournaments . In addition, other sporting events and concerts were held in the Metrodome at irregular intervals. The parking area at the Metrodome was also used for concerts.
