With The New Firm ( German  The new resistant ), the local derby between the Danish football clubs FC København (German FC Copenhagen , in short FCK ) from the capital and Brøndby Idrætsforening (German Brøndby Sports Association , in short: Brøndby IF or BIF ) from the suburb Brøndby designated. The duels are also known under the name Slaget om København (German Battle of Copenhagen ) or Nyklassikeren (German New Classic ). Brøndby IF is often incorrectly referred to as Brøndby Copenhagen in German-speaking countries.

The name New Firm is a derivative of the traditional Old Firm (German Das alten Constant ) between the most successful Scottish football clubs Glasgow Rangers and Celtic Glasgow . There is another derby in Scotland called the New Firm . This is where the teams from Aberdeen FC and Dundee United meet.

history

The derby had its premiere on September 6, 1992, after the professional teams of the Danish record champions Kjøbenhavns Boldklub with 15 titles between 1913 and 1980 and the 7-time title holder B 1903 Copenhagen (between 1920 and 1976) joined FC Copenhagen on July 1, 1992 had joined together. The duels quickly developed into a crowd puller in the top Danish league and ensure well-filled stands in Parken as well as in Brøndby Stadium , Denmark's largest football stadiums. While the Copenhagen supporters are more likely to be found among entrepreneurs and self-employed , Brøndby IF is traditionally an association of workers .

The first season 1992/93 the Løverne (German lion ), the nickname of the FCK, was crowned with the title win. Then the FCK sank into the midfield of the Danish Super League . At the beginning of the 2000s, FC Copenhagen took over the supremacy in Danish professional football. With the 2001 championship in the Superliga under the brief tenure of coach Roy Hodgson , seven more national titles followed ( 2003 , 2004 , 2006 , 2007 , 2009 , 2010 , 2011 ), three cup wins in 2004, 2009 and 2012, two successes in the Royal League 2005 and 2006 as well as the Danish Super Cup 2001 and 2004. In the last New Firm of the 2000/01 season they met on the penultimate matchday. The realized FCK striker Sibusiso Zuma with the 2: a spectacular goal by a 0 in the 56 minute Fallrückzieher that was later selected to the gate of the decade in Denmark. FC Copenhagen's greatest international success was reaching the round of 16 in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League .

Brøndby IF was founded on December 3, 1964 through the merger of the district clubs Brøndbyøster IF and Brøndbyvester IF. 1981 Brøndby succeeded in promotion to the highest Danish league 1. Division and after three fourth places in the subsequent seasons Brøndby IF 1985 was able to celebrate the first championship title. In 1987, Brøndby became the second club in the world to go public . From the mid-1980s until the founding of FC Copenhagen in 1992, they were the leading force in Danish football, which during this time has five championships ( 1985 , 1987 , 1988 , 1990 , 1991 ), the cup victory in 1989 and the narrowly missed entry into made clear by the final in the 1990/91 UEFA Cup . No fewer than eleven former and current Brøndby players were in the winning squad of the 1992 European Football Championship .

Not enough with the fact that in 1992 a serious competitor emerged with the FCK. Brøndby IF got into a financial crisis in which the club squeezed debts of around 400 million Danish kroner (today around 53 million euros). The survival of the association could only be ensured through strict austerity measures. Under coach Ebbe Skovdahl achieved the title hat trick with the championship titles in 1996 , 1997 and 1998 . In 2002 Brøndby was only able to secure the title because of the better goal difference against FC Copenhagen, while they were now ten points ahead of the capital city. In 2005 BIF was able to break through the dominance of the Copenhageners once again . After the FCK weakened at the beginning of the season and was only to be found in the middle of the table, the yellow-blue held a point advantage of twelve points until the end of the season. This season the team from Brøndby achieved the highest win in Derby history with a 5-0 win. Copenhagen finally reached second place in the table.

During the winter break of 2012/13 in the Superliga (20th matchday), BIF only finished last in the table and is threatened with relegation. FC Copenhagen confidently led the top of the table by twelve points. In addition to the sporting crisis, Brøndby is in dire financial straits. As a first decisive measure against bankruptcy , the salaries of the players and other club employees were cut significantly in January 2013, with their consent. The reasons for the financial difficulties of the club are accumulated debts over the years and a continuous decline in attendance.

Fans

The official fan club of FC Copenhagen is the FC København Fan Club (FCKFC for short). With over 20,000 members, it is the largest football fan club in Scandinavia . It was founded before the merger on October 24, 1991. The official Brøndby IF fan club called Brøndby Support has existed since September 30, 1993.

In addition to the peaceful fans, ultras and hooligan groups are also organized at both clubs. To Brøndby z. B. the groups Blue Front , South Side United , Suburban Casuals or the Yellow Blue Crew . On the side of FC Copenhagen are u. a. the Copenhagen Casuals Young Boys and the Urban Crew .

Since the willingness to use violence among fans has increased over time, the fingerprints are taken from the buyers of the tickets according to official orders .
