Breidenbach Castle

Breidenbach Castle

At the exit of Oberbreidenbach in the direction of Spich is the castle and knight seat Haus Breidenbach on a southern slope. The origin is unclear and is dated to the 15th century. In 1434 a knight named Gerlach von Breidenbach was named, who lent Count Adolf von Berg 96 guilders. In 1447 a Gisse van Breidenbach was named in the Bergische Ritterzetteln for the office of Steinbach. In 1507 Johann von Mosbach called Breidenbach owned half a estate there. Then on February 24, 1508, Johann von Mosbach called Breidenbach and his son Roland issued a mortgage note. They put Roland's child part of the Breidenbach house as a pledge. House Breidenbach came by inheritance to the von Cloedt family via the von Ole (Oell) family.

Coat of arms of those of Breidenbach

In a process before the Imperial Court of Justice between the heirs of Cloedt zu Breidenbach and the widows of Johann von Pütz, the knightly seat of Breidenbach was assessed on July 21, 1727. It comprised 90 acres of tree gardens, meadows, fields, bushes and meadows, hunting rights and church and burial grounds, totaling 4,000 thalers. There were also two leased farms, a total of 13,442 thalers. After that, the knight's seat came into the possession of the von Seraing zu Eibach family. Because of pressing debts and to make the division easier, the von Seraing family sold the house and knight's seat of Burg Breidenbach to five farmers from the surrounding area for 7,500 thalers. Their descendants still own shares in it today.

Chapel to Oberbreidenbach

Chapel Oberbreidenbach

Not far from Breidenbach Castle, on the way to Spich, there is a small chapel. Shaded by an ancient linden tree, the church, built in 1670, is a simple building of 9.40 × 4.90 m in the light and has a small roof turret. It is consecrated to Christ Salvator, the Mother of God and St. Joseph as thanks for the salvation from the dysentery which had appeared in a bad way the year before. At the request of the Junker Theodor von Cloedt zu Breidenbach, the vicar general celebrated St. Mass in the chapel is permitted on all festive days.
