The University of Vechta is a university in the Lower Saxony city ​​of Vechta . The number of students is currently around 4,900. The international name of the University of Vechta is University of Vechta . For historical reasons, the focus is on teacher training and Catholic theology , as Vechta and South Oldenburg form a Catholic exclave in northern Germany ( Bischöflich Münstersches Officialat ).

history

Early history

On August 2, 1830, the normal school for the training of Catholic elementary school teachers was founded for the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg , which was expanded into a teachers' seminar in 1861 . In 1928 the pedagogical course in Vechta was opened again for Catholic primary school teachers . On April 1, 1941, the "Oldenburg Teacher Training Institute Vechta i. O. ”, for the accommodation of which the Dominican monastery Füchtel was confiscated.

Pedagogical Academy / Vechta University of Education / Location of the University of Osnabrück

After the end of the Nazi era, a denominational State Pedagogical Academy Vechta was re-established on March 19, 1946 . After Oldenburg was incorporated into the state of Lower Saxony on November 1, 1946, the Pedagogical Academy was transferred to the Pedagogical Academy, later the Vechta University of Education (PH Vechta) by decree of December 31, 1947 . In 1965 the Lower Saxony Concordat guaranteed the training of Catholic teachers in Vechta. In 1969, the eight universities of teacher education in Lower Saxony were merged to form the Lower Saxony University of Education , Vechta was a department.

In 1973/74 the PH Vechta became a department / location of the newly founded University of Osnabrück and remained so until 1995. In the meantime, its existence was in serious danger; In 1987 the Science Council even recommended closing the university.

Independence, merger and promotion to university

The Vechta location became an independent university with its own study profile and a focus on teacher training in 1995 under the name " Hochschule Vechta" . From 1995 to 2010 the university officially had the status of a "Scientific University of the State of Lower Saxony with university status ". With independence, some new courses were set up, including a. Gerontology , Cultural Studies and Geography. From October 2003, the courses were converted to the Bachelor / Master structure provided for in the Bologna Process . The university began by converting teacher training into two consecutive courses. The first graduates of the new form of teacher training received their certificates in August 2007. This made the Vechta University of Applied Sciences among the first universities in Germany to bid farewell to graduates with a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree . In October 2005, the Vechta University of Applied Sciences merged with the Catholic University of Applied Sciences North Germany (KFH), which is also located on site . At the same time, the courses previously offered at the KFH as well as the gerontology and educational sciences courses offered at the university were converted into new Bachelor and Master courses; the previous courses in the field of environmental sciences have been discontinued.

After an amendment to the Lower Saxony University Act, Vechta was officially allowed to call itself a university since June 2010. This is linked to the entitlement to do a doctorate or habilitation as a researcher. At the Vechta University of Applied Sciences, however, it was possible to obtain a Dr. phil. or Dr. rer. nat. get a doctorate.

The university is in a comprehensive reform process. In the area of ​​teaching and studies, these are the conversion to bachelor and master courses, the expansion of service and advisory offers, quality assurance measures such as the establishment of a service center, online evaluations or the development of study diaries to measure student workloads. In the area of ​​research, the activities were bundled under the heading "Transformation Processes" and focused on the priorities of rural areas, education, gender, gerontology & social work, cultural studies - cultural change and trust research. A center for teacher training was set up in 2012, and in 2015 the science area was restructured through a change in the basic order: Departments and research institutes and centers were introduced. The faculty structure was introduced on April 1, 2017. The university now has three faculties: Education and Social Sciences, Natural and Social Sciences, and Humanities and Cultural Studies.

Church on campus

On January 21, 2014, after a construction phase of around 15 months, the church on campus was opened. Among other things, it serves as an ecumenical center for students and university pastors. It is designed as a place of faith and encounter. The centerpiece is the Edith Stein Chapel.

research

The main research areas of the University of Vechta are based on the range of subjects in teacher training, supplemented by the university's new areas of focus. In the target agreements 2014–2018 with the state of Lower Saxony, the focus areas rural areas, education, gender, gerontology & social work, cultural studies - cultural change as well as trust research and the main topic “transformation processes” are defined.

Until 2014, the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the Georg-August University of Göttingen operated a branch “Process engineering in the processing industry ” on the campus of the University of Vechta . The branch of the Grassland Science Department of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the Georg-August University of Göttingen is still in existence.

Various Bachelor and Master courses are offered at the University of Vechta. The focus is on social services (management of social services, gerontology, social work) and in the teaching profession (elementary, secondary and secondary schools). Then there are the Masters in Cultural Change and Geographies of Rural Areas - Change through Globalization.

There are three faculties at the university :

  • Faculty I Education and Social Sciences with the subjects: Educational Sciences, Gerontology, Management of Social Services, Social Work and Economics and Ethics.
  • Faculty II Natural and Social Sciences with the subjects: Biology, Geography, Mathematics, Political Science, General Studies, Social Sciences and Sports Science.
  • Faculty III Humanities and Cultural Studies combines the following subjects: English Studies, Design Education, German Studies, History, Catholic Theology, Cultural Studies, Art and Music.

Partner universities

The University of Vechta has over 70 partner universities worldwide. In December 2006, a university partnership was concluded with the famous Berkeley University in the USA. The first African partnership took place in March 2008 with St. Augustine University in Tanzania .

The International Office (formerly the International Office) is responsible for looking after international contacts for students and teachers.

The university presents itself as a small, modern campus university with several branch offices in the city as well as the Science Shop Vechta / Cloppenburg in neighboring Cloppenburg.

Library

The university has its own library on campus. It is not only available to university members. The one-time fee for the user card is 5 euros in accordance with the state ordinance. Via the Web OPAC , the library's electronic catalog, research can be carried out online , books ordered and the loan period extended.

Dormitories

There are a total of three student residences and one student residential park in Vechta. These are not provided by the university, but by other providers, e.g. B. the Studentenwerk Osnabrück (Sonnenkamp dormitory) or the Caritas Foundation (Immentun student dormitory ). The residential park and the Sonnenkamp student residence are in close proximity to the campus. The other two dormitories can be reached in a few minutes by bike. At the end of 2008 the university announced that the Edith-Stein-Kolleg would be dissolved as a student residence and that the Caritas Foundation would buy it. The former dormitory, which was integrated in the R building of the university, has been used as an office building by university employees since it was closed. Transport links

The university has its own bus stop "Universität" on Universitätsstrasse, which is served by the city bus 602 every hour. From the train station in Vechta (approx. 15 minutes on foot) trains run every hour in the direction of Bremen and Osnabrück.

Culture and theater

The student stage has existed at the university since 1980 . Several students are involved here and every year they put on famous plays such as Max Frisch's classic “ When the War Was Over” or thrillers such as “10 Little Negroes” by Agatha Christie in the auditorium of Vechta University. Next to the student stage there is the university choir .
