Father Brown is a 39-part crime series that was produced in five seasons between 1966 and 1972 and broadcast by all regional broadcasters of the ARD in their evening programs. The first 13 episodes (seasons 1 and 2) were shot in black and white, the remaining episodes were shot in color. Various authors were responsible for the scripts (see episode list), Rainer Wolffhardt (season 1), Imo Moszkowicz (seasons 2 and 3) and Hans Quest (seasons 4 and 5) directed. The production initially had the television production Dr. Heinz Scheiderbauer (seasons 1 and 2), later in charge of TV 60 television production (seasons 3–5).
action
Father Brown solves murder cases from a different point of view than the police usually do: He tries to understand the role of the perpetrator in order to understand his thoughts and actions and thus ultimately to be able to solve the crime. In doing so, he is usually the proverbial nose length ahead of the police. The individual episodes are based on motifs from the novels by Gilbert K. Chesterton , these are named with their original titles in the episode lists next to the subsequent titles. The implementation of these novel templates was carried out relatively faithfully.
Others
The first two seasons of the series were shot and produced in Austria, which is why most of the roles were cast by Austrian actors. From season 3 the production was transferred to the Munich TV 60 television production, which is why with the beginning of episode 14 the shooting took place in Bavaria and mainly German actors were to be seen in guest roles.
Josef Meinrad , who played the title role, wanted to become a priest himself and lived for a while in a monastery.
Helmut Alimonta played in Hell, Hell, Hell , The Heavenly Arrow and The Purple Wig , making him the most frequently used actor in this series.
In the episode The Inheritance of Robert Musgrave (Season 4 / Episode 5) director Hans Quest acted at the side of his wife Ingrid Capelle . The castle used as the setting in this episode was the same as in Hell, Hell, Hell (Season 3 / Episode 6), but had a different name.
Within the individual seasons, the mode of broadcasting was partly different, the episodes were broadcast weekly, sometimes only monthly.
Episode 1 ( The Mistake of the Machine ) was the only one to be repeated for the first time in 1996 since it was first broadcast.

Reviews
The crime thriller homepage sees leading actor Josef Meinrad "undoubtedly with his leisurely manner" as "the right cast" , but criticizes the title music of the first three seasons, which is "better and more appropriate" in the rest , whereby here a comparison with the soundtrack of Martin Böttcher from the two Heinz Rühmann films The Black Sheep and He Can't Leave It and the ARD series Pfarrer Braun is drawn. The crime thriller homepage also notes positively that with the change of the production company from season 3 onwards, "the series is not only gaining in color, but also in speed and tension" . You can tell that the filming did not take place in England, "but the loving, detailed set makes it easy to forget" .
publication
All seasons have been released on DVD, although there are only fragments of the episode Salat for Herr Colonel and these are only contained within the DVD with seasons 1 and 2 as 9-minute bonus material. The entire 5th season can be seen on YouTube for almost five hours .
