Herzog & de Meuron is an internationally renowned architecture firm based in Basel , founded in 1978 by the architects Jacques Herzog (born April 19, 1950 in Basel ) and Pierre de Meuron (born May 8, 1950 in Basel) .

life and work

Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron , who had known each other since primary school , studied architecture at the ETH Zurich from 1970 to 1975 with the architects Aldo Rossi , Luigi Snozzi and Dolf Schnebeli . After gaining a degree in architecture, they founded an office community at Rheinschanze 6 in Basel in 1978.

De Meuron and Herzog have been visiting professors at Harvard University since 1994, and have also been teaching at ETH Zurich since 1999.

In addition to this headquarters, they have five other branches in London, Hamburg, Madrid, New York City and Hong Kong. The architecture office employs a total of around 420 people. Partners of Herzog & de Meuron are: Christine Binswanger (* 1964), Ascan Mergenthaler (* 1969), Stefan Marbach (* 1970), Michael Fischer (* 1969), Jason Frantzen (* 1977), Andreas Fries (* 1976), Robert Hösl (* 1965), Wim Walschap (* 1969) and Esther Zumsteg (* 1964).

Construction projects (selection)

Herzog & de Meuron pioneered the use of gabions as a design element on building facades. At the Dominus winery in Napa Valley , California , the architecture firm's first non-European project in 1997, gabions were arranged as a ventilated façade, partly filled with broken glass instead of broken stone and thus translucent.

Herzog & de Meuron became internationally known with the renovation of the Tate Gallery of Modern Art in London, the exterior design of which the architects developed - as in many other projects - together with the Zurich landscape architect Dieter Kienast . The art gallery was built into the old Bankside Powerstation , a former oil power station, and opened in 2000. Due to the unexpectedly large number of visitors, an extension was built between 2010 and 2016. In addition, Herzog and de Meuron designed the two stadiums St. Jakob-Park in Basel (2001) and Allianz Arena in Munich (2005). For the Olympic Games in 2008 they planned and built the national stadium in Beijing. They also dealt with the planning of a large, new district in the same city in order to bring new accents to the uniform Chinese urban architecture. As with stadium construction, an attempt was made to think history, tradition and today's demands together and to incorporate them into the buildings. The urban development project met with enthusiasm among experts because it promised that its residents would identify with their district.

Your work in the People's Republic of China sparked a wave of criticism. Chinese experts accuse the architects of “showmanship” and “an abuse of China as a field of experimentation”, while human rights activists criticize the cooperation with China because of the regime's human rights violations . Another point of criticism is the high cost of the construction projects.

Elbphilharmonie in HafenCity in Hamburg completed on November 1st, 2016

In 2005 the Hamburg Senate approved the construction of the Elbphilharmonie . Above the multi-storey brick facade (architect: Werner Kallmorgen ) of the Kaispeicher A in the Elbe , a mighty wave of glass has been created that houses, among other things, three concert halls, a conference center, apartments and a hotel; the space behind the facade of the old warehouse is used as a parking garage, among other things utilized. Similar to the Tate Modern, an old building was expanded and converted into a new one. The Elbphilharmonie was partially elevated to the new landmark of the Hanseatic city during the construction period. Here too, according to the research report, Herzog and de Meuron are said to be partly responsible for the sharp rise in costs. B. due to deadlines not being met several times.

For the pharmaceutical company Roche , Herzog & de Meuron designed a 154-meter high-rise in Basel. The shape of the building should be reminiscent of the double helix . The project was withdrawn by Roche. A new design for the office building, which should now reach 178 meters, was announced by Roche on December 17, 2009. This so-called Roche Tower was completed in 2015. In front of the Prime Tower in Zurich, it is the tallest building in Switzerland. A second, 205-meter-high Roche tower has been under construction since 2017 and is expected to be completed in 2022.

Awards

In addition to numerous other awards, the two architects received the German Critics' Prize in 1993 . In 2001 they were awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize . The jury praised their passionate use of a whole range of building materials with which they would advance the art of architecture. Five years later they received the British Design Award from the Royal Institute of British Architects , the following year the Praemium Imperiale and the Great Nike of the Association of German Architects (BDA) .
