Pinay is about 55 kilometers west-northwest of Lyon . The Loire limits the municipality to the west. Pinay is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Jodard in the north, Neulise in the east and north-east, Saint-Marcel-de-Félines in the south and south-east, Saint-Georges-de-Baroille in the south and south-west and Vézelin-sur-Loire with Saint- Paul-de-Vézelin to the west and north-west.
