Coordinates: 34 ° 11 ′  S , 142 ° 9 ′  E The Rural City of Mildura is a local administrative area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria around the city of Mildura . The area is 22,2082.5 km² and has about 54,000 inhabitants. It is Victoria's largest LGA by area and takes up almost 10% of the total national territory.

The rural community of Mildura is located about 550 km from the capital Melbourne in the extreme northwest of Victoria and contains the following villages: Lindsay Point, Cullulleraine, Mildura , Merbein, Meringur, Werrimull, Merrinee, Red Cliffs, Nangiloc, Hattah, Irymple, Murrayville, Underbool, Walpeup, Ouyen and Mittyack. The seat of the Rural City Council is in the town of Mildura in the northeast of the LGA on the border with New South Wales , where about 33,000 people live.

Settlement of the area began at the end of the 19th century when the Chaffey brothers from Canada used irrigation systems to make the area on the Murray River usable for agriculture. Economic recession and rabbit plagues, as well as the climate in general, made it difficult to get started.

The area that is part of the Mallee region is the driest and hottest area in Victoria. In some places there is only 240 mm of precipitation per year and temperatures often rise to over 40 ° C in summer, but temperatures below zero are also reached in winter. The southeastern part of the Rural City was made usable for the cultivation of grain, especially barley and wheat. In the north of the Murray River known as Sunraysia , tropical fruits and grapes are produced.

The cultivation of grapes around Mildura and Red Cliffs accounts for a significant proportion of the total wine production in Australia. Here's products include Lindemans , a major exporter, the large quantities to Europe delivers.

administration
