Footballer of the Year is an annual award given by the Swiss Football Association to the most outstanding football players in Switzerland , who are named Credit Suisse Player of the Year .

A total of ten awards will be given - further categories are the best young players, teams, goals and achievements of the year. A jury of experts makes a pre-selection, the winners are determined in the context of an audience vote.

Until 1998 the election was made by the newspaper Sport . The first excellent player was Karl Odermatt . A distinction was made between the best Swiss and the best foreign players. Between 1998 and 2012 the Axpo Player of the Year was awarded to the best player in the local Super League, and since then the Raiffeisen Super League Best Player .

The most successful player is Heinz Hermann , who has been voted Footballer of the Year five times. Jörg Stiel was the first goalkeeper to receive an award in 2003. The most successful club are the Grasshoppers Zurich , which presented an award winner 18 times.

Foreign player of the year

From 1975 to 1998, the title of the best foreign player of the year was awarded separately, and from 1998 both foreign and Swiss players could be named “Axpo Player of the Year”.

Axpo Player of the Year

Alexander Frei has been named Credit Suisse Player of the Year three times and Axpo Player of the Year twice.

The best player in the Axpo Super League (Swiss or foreign) was honored with the title Axpo Player of the Year .

Raiffeisen Super League Best Player

The league has had a new sponsor since the 2012/13 season and is called the Raiffeisen Super League . Since then, the best player in the league has been honored at the “SFL Award Night”. Honors include the Raiffeisen Super League Best Player , the Brack.ch Challenge League Best Player , the best coach, the best young players, the best teams and the audience favorites in the two top divisions.
