The Scottish Football League First Division was held for the second time in 1976/77 , after the Premier Division was introduced as the second highest Scottish league . It was also the second division of the men's football league in Scotland under the name First Division . In the 1976/77 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 39 matchdays. Each team played three times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship was won by FC St. Mirren , which also secured participation in the 1977/78 Premier Division season . In addition to the Saints , the runner-up FC Clydebank also rose. The Raith Rovers and FC Falkirk had to relegate to the Second Division . The top scorer with 36 goals was Billy Pirie of FC Dundee .
