The Scottish Football League First Division was played for the third time in 1977/78 as only the second highest Scottish league . It was also the third event as the second highest division of men's football in Scotland under the name First Division . In the 1977/78 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 39 matchdays. Each team played three times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship won Greenock Morton , which at the same time secured participation in the Premier Division season 1978/79 . In addition to the Greenock , the runner-up Heart of Midlothian also rose. Alloa Athletic and FC East Fife had to relegate to the Second Division . The top scorer with 35 goals was for the second time as a result William Pirie of Dundee FC .
