The Scottish Football League First Division was played for the sixth time in 1980/81 as only the second highest Scottish league . It was also the sixth event as the second highest division of men's football in Scotland under the name First Division . In the 1980/81 season, 14 clubs competed against each other in a total of 39 match days. Each team played three times against each other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship was won by the team from Hibernian Edinburgh , which at the same time secured participation in the Premier Division season 1981/82 . In addition to the Hibs , the runner-up FC Dundee also rose. Stirling Albion and the Berwick Rangers had to relegate to the Second Division . The top scorer with 22 goals was Ally McCoist of FC St. Johnstone .
