Coordinates: 36 ° 21 ′ S , 146 ° 41 ′ E Indigo Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 2040.1 km² and has about 16,000 inhabitants.
Indigo is located on the northern border of Victoria about 280 km northeast of the capital Melbourne and includes the following localities: Barnawatha, Beechworth, Chiltern, Kiewa, Rutherglen, Stanley, Tangambalanga, Wahgunyah and Yackandandah. The City Council is located in Beechworth in the southwest of the LGA.
Indigo was once a large gold rush region, and Chiltern and Beechworth were two large centers with several thousand residents in the 1850s. Today Beechworth in particular is famous for its many historical buildings from the period.
Today the Shire is more agricultural, so Rutherglen is a well-known wine region, and it lives from its location in the catchment area of the greater Albury - Wodonga .

The Indigo Shire Council has seven members who are elected by LGA residents. Indigo is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors .
