Coordinates: 37 ° 12 '  S , 145 ° 43'  O Murrindindi Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . The area is 3879.8 km² and has about 13,700 inhabitants.

Murrindindi borders the capital Melbourne to the south and includes the following towns: Acheron, Alexandra , Buxton, Eildon, Flowerdale, Glenburn, Highlands, Kinglake , Lake Eildon, Lake Mountain, Marysville , Narbethong, Rubicon, Strath Creek, Taggerty, Thornton, Toolangi , Yea and Yarck. The seat of the City Council is in the city of Alexandra, which has around 2,400 inhabitants, in the northwest of the LGA.

In addition to tourism, agriculture and forestry are the main industries in the region. Murrindindi is known for its trout and the fish farms on the Goulburn River and Lake Eildon provide 83% of all farmed trout in Australia. In the Kinglake area to the south there is also a well-known 25 hectare raspberry plantation.

The Lake Eildon , the second largest water reservoir of Victoria with an area of 13,840 hectares and nearly 500 km long coastline, which forms the eastern boundary of the Shires, is a main attraction for water sports. Today's Eildon emerged from a workers' settlement in the early 1950s when the reservoir was expanded to its present size.

In 2009, devastating bushfires ravaged the Shire, devastating Kinglake and most of Marysville.

administration

The Murrindindi Shire Council has six members elected by the residents of the six ridings. These six boroughs are King Parrot, Cheviot, Dennis, Koriella, Red Gate, and Cathedral. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
