Unbihexium is the chemical element with the atomic number 126 that has not yet been detected. In the periodic table it is between the 125 unbipentium and the 127 unbiseptium .

The name is preliminary and is derived from the ordinal number. The unbihexium isotope Ubh-310 is expected to have an above-average half-life compared to neighboring nuclides , because not only its proton number 126, but also its neutron number 184 is “ magical ”.

In the extended periodic table it belongs to the element category of superactinoids ( it is not included in the "normal" periodic table ).

history

The first attempt to create element 126 was made in 1971 by Bimbot et al. using a so-called "hot fusion reaction":

In the experiment, a high energy alpha particle was observed and was taken as an indication of the successful synthesis of Element No. 126. Recent research suggests that these results are highly unlikely to be interpreted.

Predictions of relatively stable Unbihexium

Based on model calculations, it is assumed that the outer core shell of the element with the charge number 126 is filled with protons. Similar considerations provided indications that a nucleus with 184 or 196 neutrons should have maximum stability. It was concluded that the unbihexium isotopes 310 Ubh and 322 Ubh are the most promising for synthesis experiments.

Predictions of chemical properties

The novel electron configuration [ Og ] 5g 6 8s 2 is predicted for element 126 . The shape of the 5g and 7d orbitals may be blurred. Recent work predicts a stable monofluoride UbhF, which could result from a bond between the 5g orbital of Ubh and the 2p orbital of fluorine .

Trivia

The filmmakers of Superman claimed that the fictional element kryptonium (not to be confused with the noble gas krypton ) had the atomic number 126. See also: kryptonite

The science fiction short story Silence is Golden by the American writer Lou Antonelli is based on the idea of the discovery of element 126 in a Texas mine. In the book Travelers Rest by Daniel Archangel, Unbihexium is said to be suitable as a rocket fuel.
