Better Call Saul is an American drama series from AMC and an offshoot of the Breaking Bad series, which aired from 2008 to 2013 . It is produced by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould and is about attorney James McGill, later known as Saul Goodman , who Peter Gould invented for the second season of Breaking Bad . The television series is a prequel and tells of McGill's career six years before he met Walter White . The series began broadcasting on February 8, 2015.

The series is set in 2002. James Morgan "Jimmy" McGill is an unsuccessful and poorly paid lawyer in Albuquerque who keeps his head above water with statutory defenses and handles his cases mostly under ethical standards. He also takes care of his older brother, Chuck, who was himself a successful lawyer before, but since a mental breakdown under self-diagnosed hypersensitivity suffers. Chuck once ran his own firm called Hamlin, Hamlin, McGill (HHM), which he has now left to his partner, Howard Hamlin. Jimmy wages a guerrilla war with Howard Hamlin, the partner in his brother's law firm, which he cannot win. But he gets support from an old friend and HHM lawyer Kim Wexler.
Flashbacks show that Jimmy, who is from Chicago , used to work there as a con artist. After he was convicted as a sex criminal by an unfortunate accident , Chuck had brought him to Albuquerque and hired him as an assistant in his law firm. After completing distance learning and being admitted to the bar, however, he was not taken on, ostensibly after Chuck's partner vetoed, and then went into business for himself. For lack of money he lets himself be carried away to unclean methods and sometimes comes into conflict with the law himself.
In addition, the story of Mike Ehrmantraut , who works as a parking lot attendant at the court in Albuquerque, is told. Jimmy and Mike don't like each other at first, but the relationship between them improves over time. Finally, Mike demands a favor for his tip from Jimmy, who should stand by him as a lawyer during an interrogation. Mike is suspected of killing two corrupt police officers who previously murdered his son. Since then, the old ex-police officer has been worried about his daughter-in-law and his little granddaughter.
At the Sandpiper Crossing retirement home , where Jimmy mostly represents seniors, he discovers widespread billing fraud. Jimmy gains access to all of the facility's trash and works with his brother Chuck to put the documents together to find evidence. Shortly thereafter, Chuck and Jimmy find themselves in a legal dispute with the opposition law firm Schweikart & Cokely . Chuck returns to HHM after a long time with Jimmy. Jimmy hopes to finally get a job at HHM, but Howard Hamlin continues to refuse. Jimmy later discovers that the reality is that Chuck has always made sure he wasn't hired as a lawyer at HHM. Chuck believes that Jimmy is still unworthy of legal practice because of his criminal past. Jimmy is disappointed and takes a break in the city of Cicero with his childhood friend Marco. Marco dies unexpectedly of a heart attack in an attempted fraud. Jimmy then returns to Albuquerque.
season 2
Jimmy now works at the Davis & Main law firm , which cooperates with the HHM law firm in the "Sandpiper Crossing" case. However, he is later fired by Clifford Main due to his behavior. After all, Jimmy and Kim each set up their own law firm under one roof. Jimmy wants to do Kim a favor and secretly manipulates the "Mesa Verde" documents in Chuck's apartment, which confuses the next trial and leads to a lengthy delay. Mesa Verde perceives the law firm HHM as incompetent and instead opts for Kim's newly founded law firm. Chuck finally finds out that Jimmy has tampered with the documents and records his confession with a voice recorder.
Mike finds himself at war with the Salamanca cartel after a dispute with Tuco Salamanca. Fearing for his granddaughter, he sabotages a drug delivery from Mexico, but fails to assassinate Hector Salamanca.
season 3
After Mike paralyzes a drug transport of the Salamancas, he discovers that the fast food chain "Los Pollos Hermanos", which is run by Gus Fring, is also involved in drug deals for the Mexican cartel. A collaboration between Gus and Mike follows. Since the Mexican cartel considers the transport of the Salamancas to be unsafe due to the sabotage, Gus Fring is now to take over Salamanca's drug transport. During an argument between Hector Salamanca and Gus Fring, Hector suffers a heart attack and paralysis because Nacho previously manipulated his medicine out of fear for his family.
Meanwhile, Jimmy is suspended as a lawyer for twelve months due to the destruction of evidence and the break-in at Chuck. In addition, he has to do community hours. In the "Sandpiper Crossing" case, the payment to Jimmy is delayed, which is why he manipulates the senior citizens.
Chuck feels humiliated after the trial and exit from HHM after his insanity is confirmed and his "hypersensitivity" is viewed as a mental illness. After he finally breaks up with his brother Jimmy, he remains lonely in his apartment. One night he destroys his apartment in order to locate an alleged power source. Eventually he willfully causes a fire with a gas lantern and dies in the burning house.
Season 4
Since Hector is no longer able to run the cartel after his stroke, Nacho is promoted by the cartel. Gus can strengthen his position of power by inciting the Salamanca clan on the Espinosa family through a staged drive-by shoot . However, the incidents attract the attention of Lalo Salamanca, who now wants to finally settle the conflict with Gus.
After Mike takes a bogus job as a security inspector at "Madrigal Electromotives", Gus introduces him to the construction of a secret drug lab under his industrial laundry. The civil engineer Werner Ziegler and other workers from Germany are hired for the complicated expansion. The workers are provided with accommodation, but because of the necessary secrecy they have to undergo strict security measures and isolated living conditions. After a large part of the construction work has been completed, Werner escapes from the accommodations. Mike manages to track down Werner, whereupon he finally kills him on behalf of Gus.
Meanwhile, Jimmy takes a job as a cell phone seller to bridge his suspension as a lawyer. However, Kim refrains from a joint law firm with Jimmy and joins the law firm "Schweikart & Cokely", which Kim supports in the "Mesa Verde" case. Jimmy doesn't get his bar license back at first, but can successfully challenge the bar association's decision by giving a speech about his relationship with Chuck. He also wants to work under a new alias from now on: Saul Goodman.
Season 5
Lalo Salamanca learned something about the construction of the laboratory. That's why Gus wants to have him shut down. The German fitters are sent back to their homeland prematurely, but they already seem to suspect what has happened to Werner Ziegler. Mike doesn't want to continue working for Gus at first. Nacho is supposed to tell Gus about Lalo's plans. The imprisoned Domingo delivers information to Hank. Jimmy and Kim get married. Lalo is jailed for murder and becomes Saul's client. Lalo hires Jimmy to collect the money for his $ 7 million bail at a change point in the middle of the desert. Here Jimmy is ambushed and can only save himself with difficulty thanks to Mike's help. The bail for Lalo is finally paid and Lalo is released. Lalo is going back home. Gus assigns a killer squad to kill him with Nacho's help. With the help of a secret escape route, Lalo survives and is able to outsmart the attackers.
Alias name
Although the name of the protagonist is Jimmy McGill, his alias Saul Goodman develops in the series . The first hint comes in the fourth episode, when Jimmy introduces himself as "Saul Goodman" to a casual acquaintance he is about to cheat in a flashback and then explains this with the homophone "'s all good, man" (in German roughly equivalent to: " everything is good / in order, man ").

After producer Gilligan had already commented on the idea of such a series during an interview in July 2012, it was announced by AMC in April 2013 and finally aired since February 2015.

Gould is the showrunner , Gilligan directed the first episode, and Breaking Bad writers Thomas Schnauz (co-executive) and Gennifer Hutchison (supervising producer) also co- write Better Call Saul . In an interview, Gilligan said that the series should be funnier than Breaking Bad .
In December 2013, Netflix announced that the first season would be available via the video-on-demand service shortly after the start of broadcasting (Europe and Latin America) and after the end of the first season (US and Canada).

In September 2013 it was announced that the American cable broadcaster AMC had ordered the Breaking Bad spin-off for a first season consisting of ten episodes - without initially having a serial pilot produced. The broadcast was later announced for November 2014.

In June 2014, the series was extended by a 13-part second season, the start of broadcasting of the first season was postponed to early 2015. The second season was later shortened to 10 episodes as in the first season.
A first teaser was published by AMC on August 12, 2014 . Information contained therein shows that the broadcast should start in February 2015. In a trailer published on November 20, 2014, the premiere date was stated as February 8, 2015. On January 27, 2015, Netflix announced that it would make the first two episodes of the series available in Germany on February 11, 2015. In Austria and Switzerland, the first two episodes were made available to Netflix subscribers on February 9 and 10, 2015. Further episodes were published on a weekly basis, on Tuesdays, in all three German-speaking countries on Netflix, in the iTunes Store and on Amazon Video .
The international premiere of the series took place on February 10, 2015 as part of the 65th Berlinale in Berlin .
The second season aired in the United States on AMC from February 15 to April 18, 2016. In Austria and Switzerland, the season was published on Netflix from February 16 to April 19, 2016, and in Germany from February 17, 2016 on Netflix. In the German iTunes Store and on Amazon Video, the episodes have been published weekly since February 16, as has been the case on Austrian and Swiss Netflix.
In mid-March 2016, AMC extended the series by a ten-part third season. Bob Odenkirk has already announced that Gustavo "Gus" Fring, known from the Breaking Bad series , will be seen this season . The title of the second season also gives an indication of this, the first letters of which, put in the correct order, result in Fring's Back (Fring is back). The third season aired from April 10 to June 19, 2017. Season 3 also saw numerous other characters known from Breaking Bad, such as Victor, Tyrus, Juan Bolsa, Francesca, Lydia Rodarte-Quayle and Don Eladio.
In June 2017, AMC extended the series by a ten-part fourth season which was broadcast from August 6, 2018. It premiered on July 19, 2018 at San Diego Comic-Con 2018.
Before the fourth season started, AMC ordered a fifth. This has been broadcast since February 23, 2020.
In January 2020, shortly before the fifth season was broadcast, a sixth and final season was announced.

Web series
Since the third season, AMC has released three ten-part short series so far. The episodes partly consist of animated and real filmed segments. Thematically, the web series corresponds to the respective season. The episodes were posted on YouTube and AMC's website during each season.
Season 1 shows the Los Pollos Hermanos Employee Training with Gus Fring. In it, as in season 3 of Better Call Saul, Gus Fring is introduced. The season also won an Emmy.
Season 2 is about the Madrigal Electromotive Security Training with Mike Ehrmantraut.
In season 3, Kim Wexler gives ethics training. The camera work is done by Jimmy.

In his review of the pilot episode, Axel Schmitt from the industry portal Serienjunkies.de wrote that “ Better Call Saul's start is not free from weaknesses”, but “promises a series that is more than just a copy of its grandiose parent format Breaking Bad ”. After completing the first season, Felix Böhme wrote that it was "already one of the best series of 2015, as it is a highly interesting, gripping and extremely entertaining character drama".
Rotten Tomatoes rated all three seasons with 97% each. At Metacritic , Better Call Saul received a Metascore of 78/100 based on 43 reviews.
