history

2005–2006: Foundation and first publications

The group was formed in Fallbrook , California in late 2005 by Scott Lewis ( vocals ), Shawn Cameron ( drums ), Rick James ( electric guitar ) and Kevin Vargas ( electric bass ) . In the founding year, a demo appeared on Enclave Records, which had the goal of long-term accommodation for the group with a record company. In September 2006, Rick James and Kevin Vargas left Carnifex. They were replaced shortly after by Steve McMahon as bassist and Travis Whiting as guitarist.

In 2006 Carnifex recorded the EP Love Lies in Ashes , which was released on March 13, 2007 via Acropolisrpm Records. This was mainly sold at concerts and online through dealers such as ITunes .

2007–2008: Debut album and Victory Records

After the group released their EP Love Lies in Ashes , the band signed a contract with the underground label This City is Burning Records and began work on the debut album. During the studio work, the group had to struggle again with a line-up change. Travis Whiting was replaced by Cory Arford in March. The debut album, called Dead in My Arms , was released on July 12, 2007. With the release of the debut album, the group began to increasingly go on concert tours. Jake Anderson, who helped the group out at concerts as the second guitarist, was integrated into the band as a permanent member.

Between July and November 2007, the group toured more and more through North America , supporting groups such as Emmure , Whitechapel and MyChildren MyBride . Due to the unexpected success of the debut album, Victory Records became aware of the group. In November Anderson and McMahon left the group and were replaced by Fred Calderon ( electric bass ) and Ryan Gudmuns ( electric guitar ). In November the group signed a worldwide record deal with Victory.

2008-2009: The Diseased and the Poisoned

The group's second album, The Diseased and the Poisoned , was released worldwide on June 24, 2008. The record positioned itself at number 19 on the Heatseekers Charts , which is determined by the US magazine Billboard .

2012–2013: Creative break

Carnifex at the Impericon Festival in Oberhausen, 2015

In February and March 2012 Carnifex toured Europe for the third time as part of the Bonecrusher Festival . As support came Betraying the Martyrs , Beneath the Massacre , Molotov Solution and Within the Ruins on. This is followed by the This is Where it Ends tour with Fleshgod Apocalypse and All Shall Perish . This tour ended on 28 April 2012. In June 2012, the band toured with I Declare War and Rings of Saturn along the West Coast of the United States .

In August 2012 Carnifex toured South America with August Burns Red . It should be the last concert tour before the group split up. On October 9, 2012, Lewis announced that the group would be on an extended hiatus for an indefinite period. He also announced that the group will play three last shows in California before that . He also stated that he was unsure about the band's future:

"Fans and Friends. First and for most, a sincere thank you is in order to our fans and friends across the world. Without your support and passion, we are nothing. As of now, Carnifex is in a state of suspended animation. The reasons for this are many and complicated. Let me be clear in saying that Shawn, Cory, Ryan, Fred and I (Scott) are all still members of Carnifex. Let me also be clear in saying that although the future is very uncertain, I can say with optimism, that this is not farewell, but rather, until we meet again. Carnifex is now retreating into the obscurity we once came from. Be certain that us as individuals and as band-mates have a true love for this band. Our desire to create our brand of art and music has never been about trends or money. These things will not decide our future. We invite you to join us live, for the last time in the foreseeable future. We will be making these select dates as memorable as possible and look forward to seeing you there. "

- The band's official announcement about the break

Between December 21 and 23, 2012, the group played three concerts in California. Shawn Cameron founded the group Unicorn Death during the band's creative break, in which his wife Diana is also involved. In mid-2013 it was announced that the group would be on a concert tour again for the first time at the end of 2013.

2013–2015: Signature with Nuclear Blast and Die Without Hope

Scott Lewis in Cologne (2013)

On June 10, 2013, it was announced that Carnifex would be replacing Miss May I on Never Say Die! Tour of Europe will be playing. On July 9, 2013, the group was signed by Nuclear Blast . In addition, Ryan Gudmunds was replaced by Jordan Lockrey as guitarist.

On March 7, 2014, the fifth studio album, which is called Die Without Hope , was released worldwide. It debuted in several official charts, including the USA (96) and Germany (81). In an interview with Nuclear Blast magazine , singer Lewis said that the break the group took in 2013 was due to the musicians' financial situation.

“Yeah, two years ago we put the band on hold, and at that point I was pretty sure that CARNIFEX would never tour or release a new album again. All of this had to do with the business situation of the band, because we were in a situation where CARNIFEX was no longer making any profit and that is an intolerable situation for a professionally hard-working band because we live from the music. "

- Scott Lewis told Nuclear Blast Magazine about the reasons for the musical break

In February and March 2014, the group toured the United States with Betraying the Martyrs , I Declare War , Here Comes the Kraken and Assassins as part of the Die Without Hope Tour . Besides Northlane, Carnifex was the support act for the European tour of Parkway Drive and Heaven Shall Burn , which took place between December 1st and 21st, 2014.

In March 2015, the band played a US tour with Chelsea Grin with Sworn In , Black Tongue and The Family Ruin in the opening act. At the concert on March 15, 2015 in Cleveland , Ohio , a 21-year-old concertgoer passed away for unknown reasons. A European tour followed in October 2015, supported by Fallujah and Within the Ruins as support acts. This concert tour was celebrated for the tenth anniversary of the band.

Since 2015: Sixth studio album Slow Death

In June 2015, Mick Kenney of Anaal Nathrakh announced that the group had started pre-production of their sixth studio album. Kenney acted as producer on the recordings of the album. The album was recorded at Audiohammer Studios from April 2016. Jason Suecof and Mark Lewis were also involved in the recordings. A few days later, Slow Death, the first single including a music video, was released.

The album was released worldwide via Nuclear Blast on August 5th, 2016 .

Between July 23 and August 21, 2016, the group will play with Cannibal Corpse , Nile , Krisiun , After the Burial , Suffocation , Revocation , Ingested and Slaughter to Prevail as part of the annual Summer Slaughter Tour in the United States.

style

Carnifex's musical style has changed over the past few years. While the group still played classic deathcore at the beginning of the band , the musical style of the formation from San Diego has changed from the 2011 album Until I Feel Nothing more to death or melodic death metal , although the group is still very much deathcore is assigned.

In an interview with the German music magazine Metal Hammer , singer Scott Lewis reveals that bands like The Black Dahlia Murder , In Flames , Arch Enemy and Dissection have musical influences on the band.

"Absolutely! The Black Dahlia Murder, In Flames, Dissection, Arch Enemy, and other groups will always have a huge impact on Carnifex. In the end, we only refined our existing sound, but didn't incorporate great new influences. "
