The 1967 feature film Casino Royale is a parody of the James Bond films that had been released up until then . The title corresponds to the first Bond novel of the same name by Ian Fleming .

History of origin

As early as 1954, the novel Casino Royale aroused the interest of Hollywood producer Gregory Ratoff . For only 6,000 dollars he received from Ian Fleming , the film rights. This makes Casino Royale is the only Bond novel, the producer of the Harry Saltzman and Albert Broccoli could not secure the rights.

It wasn't until 1967 that the novel became a movie. Producer Charles K. Feldman first tried to get Sean Connery to play the lead. However, this demanded a fee of one million US dollars, which Feldman was too expensive at the time. Later he is said to have said to Connery that the million would have been cheaper in the end than the chaos that followed after the film, which was not least caused by the multitude of other stars.

Feldman then decided to turn the fabric into a Bond parody. He needed numerous directors and screenwriters to put the project into practice. Due to the parodic intention as well as the difficulties in shooting and editing, the finished film has only marginal similarities with Fleming's book. Only the scenes in which Peter Sellers as one of many James Bonds appearing in the film competes in the casino against “Le Chiffre” to gamble are roughly taken from the book.

action

Bonds Villa: Mereworth Castle, painting from 1746

SMERSH , a worldwide operating secret organization, has started to eliminate agents of various great powers and threaten the universe. The four chiefs of the secret service, " M ", Ransome, Le Grand and Smernov, feel compelled to seek help from "Sir James Bond", who has already been comfortably retired. The stuttering Bond is very angry that his namesake is trailing a trail of dead female agents and, moreover, only seems to solve his cases with the help of nonsensical gadgets from the armorer “ Q ”. Bond had once withdrawn after convicting his secret love Mata Hari and having to deliver it to the executioner.

He no longer wants anything to do with the secret services, even a letter from the Queen cannot change his mind. With a devious personal attack on his seclusion, "M" wants to force him back into service. Bond's mansion is bombed by the British army, but "M" blesses the time as collateral damage . Thereupon Bond declares himself ready to interfere in the case, which the observing SMERSH headquarters immediately hears and triggers “Plan B” to destroy Bond's image as a clean man and, ideally, himself along with it.

Sir James is already being watched by agents on the drive to Scotland to see "M" s widow, Lady Fiona McTarry, to whom he is supposed to deliver his modest remains. Lady Fiona is not at all surprised by "M" 's death. Her house ghost, the Gray Piper, has already informed her and the whole house is full of grieving female relatives who are preparing the traditional haggis mourning meal. Some of them (all daughters of "M", also adopted ones) behave strangely. Meg and Heather secretly exchange a button on Bond's jacket, and they learn that "Mimi" has never failed. "Mimi" turns out to be Lady Fiona, who then tries to seduce Bond during the night as a "widow's duty" - but he remains steadfast. Since the girls think she is too committed to Bond, Mimi is locked up. The next morning, Bond goes on a red grouse hunt . For this purpose, SMERSH converted a truck into a mobile launching base for flying red grouse bombs, which are attracted by the button on Bond's jacket. Mimi has been able to free herself and helps Bond to ward off the bomb geese. Then she wants to retire to a nunnery in Berlin that is run by the International Mothers Aid.

On leaving Scotland, Sir James can still eliminate a remote-controlled SMERSH milk delivery truck that was supposed to blow it up. Bond goes to the secret service headquarters and is greeted with a smile by Miss Moneypenny , whom he gives him a big kiss. However, she turns out to be their daughter. And other people remind Bond that he's gotten a lot older. He also learns that most of the secret agents have been lured to their deaths by female counter-agents and that the replacement Bond is now working for television. His nephew Jimmy Bond has been missing in the Caribbean for some time. Bond therefore instructs Moneypenny to raise new "bonds", all of which are to appear as "Agent James Bond 007".

First of all, Moneypenny uses "personal commitment" to convince himself that Agent Cooper is ideally suited for the job. Sir James himself hires the richest spy in the world, Vesper Lynd, who has just sold off the Eiffel Tower for nuclear warheads and bought the Nelson's Column from Trafalgar Square in London. Vesper Lynd is recruiting next agent Evelyn Tremble at Buckingham Club, who is said to be an excellent baccarat player - he has at least written a book about it. Vesper invites Tremble to his home, where he hopes for an amorous adventure; when he arrives, she is disposing of a corpse. After a night of love (at least hinted at), Vesper tests Trembles disguise skills (as Hitler, Napoleon and Toulouse-Lautrec) and hires him to defeat the supposed boss of SMERSH, the infamous Le Chiffre, in baccarat. At the headquarters, Tremble receives a wristwatch with a built-in television camera and a bulletproof vest from the armorer “Q” for his mission.

Bond now learns that the International Mothers Aid in Berlin is run by SMERSH and decides to put his illegitimate daughter Mata Bond (from his love affair with Mata Hari) on the organization. Little does he know, however, that the real boss of the organization, Dr. Noah, someone close to him and therefore well informed about every step.

In Berlin, with the help of the agent Carlton Towers, Mata finds out that Le Chiffre has lost the organization's money in a card game and is having to buy it back at an auction of secret film recordings. Should Le Chiffre fail, he would have to die. Mata can destroy the films that were up for auction and escape himself. Le Chiffres deputy is blown up in a phone booth because of his failure, which also tears down the Berlin Wall . Le Chiffre now wants to raise the money at a baccarat tournament.

Meanwhile, Evelyn Tremble (as James Bond 007) and Inspector Mathis arrive in France to face Le Chiffre at the Casino Royale. But Miss Langbein is already waiting in the hotel for Tremble, who is supposed to seduce and kill him on behalf of Le Chiffre. Tremble can actually be seduced and put to sleep with a sleeping pill in champagne. But then he is woken up by Vesper, who tells him that she has "already taken care of Miss Langbein".

In the casino, Tremble discovered that Le Chiffre was wearing x-ray glasses and was able to see all the card values of his opponents. At the card table, Tremble engages Le Chiffre in nonsensical conversations, during which Vesper can exchange the X-ray glasses for normal glasses. So Tremble can win his game against Le Chiffre. But outside Vesper is meanwhile kidnapped by Le Chiffres people. Tremble takes on the chase in " Pink Panther " fashion in his Formula 3 racing car.

But Tremble is also kidnapped. Le Chiffre wants the money back from him. But Tremble resists torture. Only when a thousand bulkheads occupy the area does the situation become problematic. Among them is Peter O'Toole , who asks Tremble if he is Richard Burton . Suddenly Vesper appears, who shoots all the bulkheads with a machine gun hidden in a bagpipe. Then she points her gun at Tremble with the words "Never trust a rich spy" before shooting him. Since Le Chiffre can no longer raise the money, Dr. Noah's men shot.

Meanwhile, Mata has been kidnapped by a UFO. Agent Mimi tells Sir James and Moneypenny to keep looking at Casino Royale. There they are put into the secret hiding place of Dr. Noah lured, but Sir James can tell Dr. To reveal Noah; it is the little "missing nephew" Jimmy Bond who uses bacteria to make all women beautiful and to destroy all men who are taller than him. But an agent named The Detainer manages to poison Jimmy with a pill that explodes as soon as Jimmy chicks 400 times.

Meanwhile, Sir James, Mata, Moneypenny and Cooper escape, meet Detainer, and escape together. While Cooper brings the women to safety, Sir James tries to get help, but is stopped by Vesper. But the French Foreign Legion , the American cavalry and an Indian troop are already on their way. Bond grabs Vesper, who kills a cashier in shock. A wild brawl ensues in which Jean-Paul Belmondo , George Raft and William Holden also appear. Eventually Jimmy hiccups one last time and the casino blows up. Once in heaven, where Sir James, Jimmy and Vesper have already arrived, the ghost of Evelyn Tremble appears and takes Jimmy to a much hotter place.

background

Casino Royale is Ian Fleming's first James Bond novel, published in 1953. As early as 1954, it was turned into a television film with Barry Nelson as Jimmy Bond and Peter Lorre as his opponent Le Chiffre. The film rights were acquired at an extraordinarily low price from a later point of view. It was not until 1962 that the successful producer duo Broccoli / Saltzman filled with their Eon Productions and their debut Dr. No the cinemas. In 2006, the novel by Eon was also made into a film under the title " Casino Royale ".

After the great success of Dr. No, several times, to bring Casino Royale into the cinemas as a “competing bond”. However, there were difficulties between the directors and the actors, which led to a constant change in the director's chair and continuous changes to the script. Peter Sellers and Woody Allen left filming in an argument. Rumor has it that Sellers was even fired. This delayed completion by several months and the cost doubled from the estimated six to twelve million US dollars.

A coherent plot had to be cut from the available material at the cutting table. The film was released in 1967 and grossed around five million US dollars. Despite the financial success, Feldman was panned by criticism.

Reviews

"As Happening scale parodic super show considerable technical work. Cleverly staged by five directors. "

“Bombastic James Bond parody. The abundance of good ideas is pushed into the background by a real jumble of unnecessarily confusing equipment effects. More of a show and overall unsatisfactory. "
