Coordinates: 37 ° 46 '  S , 145 ° 3'  O Banyule City is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . Banyule belongs to the metropolis Melbourne , the capital of Victoria. The area is 63 km² and has about 120,000 inhabitants.

Banyule is 7 to 21 km northeast of Melbourne city center and contains 20 districts: Bellfield, Briar Hill, Bundoora, Eaglemont, Eltham North, Greensborough, Heidelberg , Heidelberg Heights, Heidelberg West, Ivanhoe, Ivanhoe East, Lower Plenty, Macleod, Montmorency, Rosanna, Saint Helena, Viewbank, Watsonia, Watsonia North and Yallambie. The southern boundary of the city is the Yarra River , with Darebin Creek flowing to the west . The Plenty River runs through the northeast half from north to south. The City Council is located in Ivanhoe in the southwest.

The name Banyule is derived from the word for "hill" in the language of the local indigenous people and originally referred to an elevation in today's Heidelberg district. Accordingly, the city's landscape is wavy and 466 hectares are vacant public land. Banyule has large parks and otherwise mainly consists of residential areas. The main facilities are the Austin and Repatriation Medical Center and the Simpson Barracks.

The Olympic village where the athletes lived for the 1956 Olympic Games is in the Heidelberg West district.

The first internationally significant movement in Australian painting around the Impressionist landscape painters of the Heidelberg School also emerged in Heidelberg around 1890.

administration

The Banyule City Council has seven members who are elected by residents of the seven wards. These seven districts (Bakewell, Beale, Griffin, Grimshaw, Hawdon, Ibbott and Olympia) are determined independently of the districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
