Coordinates: 38 ° 10 ′  S , 144 ° 21 ′  E The City of Greater Geelong is a local administrative area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria around the city of Geelong . The area is 1240 km² and has about 230,000 inhabitants.

Greater Geelong encloses the southwest and western parts of Port Phillip Bay and borders the capital Melbourne to the north . The LGA includes the following localities, among others: Barwon Heads, Ceres, Clifton Springs, Geelong , Highton, Lara, Mount Duneed, Ocean Grove, Portarlington, Reedy Lake and St Leonards. The City Council is located in the coastal city of Geelong in the southwest of the LGA.

Three quarters of the inhabitants of the Greater City live in the city itself, which also determines its economy with its industry. It is the second largest city in Victoria. The area stretching north of it towards Melbourne is a rural area where many urban commuters have settled.

The southern part of the LGA is the Bellarine Peninsula (except for the Queenscliffe Borough ), a popular tourist destination. The various vacation spots and larger campsites attract summer beach vacationers in the densely populated area. The south coast facing the Bass Strait is also interesting for surfers. Geelong is also the starting point of the Great Ocean Road, which runs west along the coast .

The Greater Geelong City Council has twelve members who are elected by residents of the twelve wards. Six of these counties, Corio, Cowie, Kildare, Brownbill, Austin and Kardania are in the Geelong area, the remaining six are Windermere, Deakin, Buckley, Cheetham, Beangala and Coryule. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
