GDR football league 1970/71

The GDR Oberliga 1971/72 was the 23rd edition of the top division of the GDR . 1. FC Magdeburg became champions for the first time . The season began on August 28, 1971 and ended on May 21, 1972. Subsequently, all major league clubs competed again within the Fuwo Cup .

Before the season

In April 1969, the German Gymnastics and Sports Association (DTSB) decided that ASK Vorwärts Berlin , which was stationed in Strausberg and thus in the Frankfurt (Oder) district , should gradually be relocated to the district capital Frankfurt (Oder) . During the 1970/71 season it became known that FC Vorwärts Berlin , which was separated from ASK in 1966 (and located in East Berlin ), would move to Frankfurt. The move was largely driven by the chairman of the Dynamo sports association and Minister for State Security Erich Mielke and the first secretary of the SED district leadership in Frankfurt Erich Mückenberger . Mielke wanted to create better competition conditions for local rivals BFC Dynamo (e.g. access to more training centers for youth training), while Mückenberger wanted to upgrade the rather under-represented district of Frankfurt.

The relocation was officially justified by the Ministry of National Defense by stating that it would be possible to guarantee the sporting advancement forward, which was not possible in Berlin. This was partly true, e.g. B. the expansion of the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark , requested by FC Vorwärts since 1966 , was not realized for years. The number of viewers for army footballers was also very low compared to the sporting success and the other league clubs. Another reason was partly cited that in view of the Four Power Agreement on Berlin (which was signed in September 1971), the forward footballers who were members of the National People's Army were withdrawn from Berlin because the city was supposed to be demilitarized.

After that, FC Vorwärts could never build on its successful past. The BFC Dynamo, on the other hand, began its sporting ascent, which later led to winning ten championships in a row.

With the rise of ASG Vorwärts Stralsund , there were two premieres: For the first time, the Rostock district was represented with two teams in the major league, and the army sports association Vorwärts also had more than one representative in the top division for the first time.

Season course

1. FC Magdeburg secured the first championship in its history on the penultimate matchday with a 1-0 win against record champions Vorwärts Frankfurt. The Magdeburg team got off to a weak start into the season and therefore Carl Zeiss Jena was the most promising in the championship race for a long time. In the end, however, Jena slipped to fourth place. Runner-up was BFC Dynamo, which achieved its best position in twelve years. Last year's champion and cup winner Dynamo Dresden came third.

The fight against relegation was finally decided between the three teams from Vorwärts Stralsund, Stahl Riesa and FC Karl-Marx-Stadt. On the last day of the match there was a direct clash between the bottom of the table, Karl-Marx-Stadt, and the penultimate Stralsund, which FCK won 2-0 and, thanks to Riesa's defeat at Carl Zeiss Jena, moved up to a saving twelfth place in the table. Both Riesa and Stralsund were later able to return to the league.

    FDGB Cup

The FDGB-Pokal was won by FC Carl Zeiss Jena this season . Carl Zeiss beat the cup defender and last year's champion Dynamo Dresden in the final, which took place shortly before the last Bundesliga matchday. Jena was only fourth in the league and thus secured qualification for international competitions.

    International competitions

The European Cup season was very different for the GDR participants. Dynamo Dresden lost to the eventual winner Ajax Amsterdam in the first round of the European Cup . The HFC Chemie was also eliminated in the first round of the UEFA Cup , but under tragic circumstances: Before the second leg at PSV Eindhoven , there was a fire in the hotel with fatal outcome for Wolfgang Hoffmann from Halle. Halle then withdrew from the cup. The other participant, Carl Zeiss Jena, made it to the third round and was eliminated from the eventual finalist Wolverhampton Wanderers . The debutant at European level BFC Dynamo caused a surprise. In the European Cup Winners' Cup , the Berliners made it to the semi-finals and only lost there on penalties against Dynamo Moscow . In the Intertoto Cup held before the season , the GDR did not take part again.
