The German Three Cushion Championship 1965/66 (DDM) was the 32nd edition of this tournament series and took place from October 21 to 24, 1965 in Sulzbach / Saar , Saarland .
history
The organizer was the "Billardclub Sulzbach" under the direction of P. Schäfer and H. Fernster. The newly built festival hall was specially rented for the tournament by the local tourist office, as it offered a good view for all spectators due to the elevated seating. One of the guests was the honorary president of the German Billiards Association (DBB), Albert Poensgen .
For the first time since 1953 the tournament was played with 10 players. These played in two groups of five players each. After the first round (the games were scored according to minus points!) The last two groups were eliminated. The ivory balls used were replaced after the first round due to their poor running properties. This also explains the low average values.
After two years of absence from the DDM, serial winner August Tiedtke competed again and was unbeatable again. He won his 18th title at this tournament. For the first time since 1956, his younger brother Gert took part again. As a classic billiard artistique player, he only came in seventh place in the final ranking. Defending champion Ernst Rudolph was able to leave the competition behind in recent years. so this time not only August Tiedtke, but also Walter Lütgehetmann and Siegfried Spielmann , actually a cadre player , passed him and he had to be content with fourth place. At times it even looked like an early end for Rudolph. In the first round, Rudolph had four minus points, Apelt five. Both now met. Wins Apelt is the Cologne Raus. However, a draw is enough to advance. The Berliner Apelt leads in the 70th shot with 56:48. While Apelt can only achieve three points in the following four shots, the Cologne man scores eight points, 59:56. Rudolph risks everything in the 81st inclusion and can achieve the missing four collisions to win and stay in the tournament. The Berliner was eliminated last.
The final between the Düsseldorf Spielmann and Tiedge from Duisburg was also exciting. With the highest series of 11 in the tournament, the Düsseldorf-based man gained a 24 point lead in the 47th recordings and so it looked quite hopeless for Tiedtke. By the 89th shot, however, he caught up to 58:52. Spielmann built up his defense so skillfully that the Duisburg series winner was often puzzled and difficult to solve even for him. This was also shown by his 12 incorrect recordings. Spielmann was finally able to end the game in his favor, but only came third behind Tiedtke and Lütgehetmann in the final ranking due to the poor general average (GD).
