This article describes the results of the eliminations for the formation of the all-German team at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome .

basketball

The preliminary round between the two German basketball teams was played back and forth. The first leg took place on April 22nd in Halle and the second leg on April 24th in the (West) Berlin Columbiahalle . Both games were won by the East German selection with 81:57 and 60:58 respectively. She had thus qualified for the pre-Olympic basketball tournament that took place in Bologna from August 13th to 20th . There she could not qualify for the Olympic tournament.

Boxing

The elimination in boxing took place on July 2nd in the (West) Berlin Sportpalast and on July 3rd on the Schwerin open-air stage.

fencing

There were two elimination tournaments on 25/26. June in the congress hall in Bad Dürkheim and on July 16 in the DHfK in Leipzig , where the individual armed forces were to be fought against each other as a team in a double round, with rankings being drawn up for the individual fighters. In the rematch in Leipzig, however, only one simple round was fought after it was certain that all Olympic places would go to West German fencers. The Olympic participants were then selected by the West German Fencing Association on the basis of their own championship results.

In Rome, Heidi Schmid won gold in the women's floret, while the men's floret team won bronze.

Soccer

The preliminary round between the two German soccer teams was played back and forth. These took place without prior notice and to the exclusion of spectators on September 16, 1959 in the (East) Berlin Walter Ulbricht Stadium and on September 23, 1959 in the Düsseldorf Rheinstadion . Both games were won by the West selection 2-0 and 2-1 respectively. So she had qualified for one of the Olympic qualifying groups, in which she could not prevail.

hockey

The elimination between the two German hockey teams was played back and forth. The first leg took place on April 24th in Cologne and the second leg on April 30th in Jena . The first leg won the West selection 3-0, while the East selection won the second leg 4-1. Since each team had won a game, two more games were scheduled, which again took place on May 26th in Cologne and on June 5th in Jena. The first game ended 0-0 and the second game was won 3-0 by the western selection. Since the German hockey team had won bronze at the Olympics in Melbourne, the West German team was directly qualified for the Olympics. There she finished seventh.

Canoe racing

The elimination was held in two regattas on July 14th on the Chiemsee and on July 27th on the Barleber See near Magdeburg . The boats with the lowest number of places qualified for the Olympics.

Modern pentathlon

Two modern pentathlon competitions were held from June 23 to 27 in Warendorf and from July 10 to 14 in Halle . The scores achieved were added up. The three best participants qualified for the Olympics, the fourth became a substitute.

Cycling

Street

There were two elimination races, first on May 26th "Around the Hainleite " and then on May 29th "Around Dortmund " (168 km). In the overall standings, East German drivers took all of the top places. The Olympic participants in the individual and team road races were then selected by the East German Cycling Association at its own discretion. The team won silver in the 100 km race in Rome.

train

There were two eliminations on May 29th in Forst and on June 7th in Frankfurt am Main . Dieter Gieseler (w) qualified in the 1000 m time trial, Günter Kaslowski (w) in the 1000 m time trial and the tandem Karl-Heinz Peter / Lothar Stäber (o). Gieseler won silver in Rome. Kaslowski was eliminated in the round of 16. Jürgen Simon / Lothar Stäber started as a tandem in Rome and won silver.

In an additional qualification scheduled on July 28th on the Vignorelli track in Milan, Jürgen Simon lost in the 1000 m painting against August Rieke (w), who was the second German driver in this discipline at the Olympics and in the quarter-finals there retired.

The qualification in the 4,000 m team pursuit was also held there, with both teams racing against the clock individually. The elimination regatta took place from May 4th to 7th on the (East) Berlin Müggelsee . It was won by Bruno Splieth with his bow crew Eckart Wagner . In Rome, the replacement sailor Karsten Meyer stepped in for the sick Wagner . The boat took 7th place there.

Flying Dutchman

The elimination regatta took place from June 2nd to 6th as part of the Plön Whitsun competitions on the Great Plön Lake . It won Achim Kadelbach with his bowman idol Trenel . For the Olympia, the West German Sailing Association nominated the crew Rolf Mulka and Ingo von Bredow , who won bronze there. Kadelbach was nominated as a substitute sailor and actually had to step in for a race for the sick von Bredow. But he didn't get a medal.

The squad reached 6th place in Rome. The best individual gymnast was Ingrid Föst in ninth. There were no finals for the individual devices.
