Sustainable Development Council
The Council for Sustainable Development (RNE) advises the German federal government on questions of sustainability and is intended to help develop and implement the German sustainability strategy with contributions and projects . Another task of the RNE is to strengthen the idea of sustainable development and the debate about sustainable development within the population and those involved in German sustainability policy , i.e. to make sustainability an important public concern. The council consists of 15 personalities from the fields of business , environmental protection , agriculture , social policy , science and development cooperation, as well as representatives from trade unions and churches , who are appointed by the Chancellor for a term of three years. The council was appointed for the first time in April 2001 by the then Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder . Its office is located in Berlin at the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ).
tasks
The council develops contributions to the national sustainability strategy, makes recommendations to the federal government and names specific fields of action and projects. It expresses itself in statements on current topics, commissions scientific studies and contributes to making sustainability an important public concern. The council is independent in its work and gives itself a work program for the current term of office. This is followed by concrete work steps.
The instruments of the RNE include:
- political dialogue (e.g. recommendations for the head of the Federal Chancellery)
- the political public (e.g. holding the annual conference as a political sustainability summit)
- Publications (e.g. current press releases)
He contributed to the discussion with the study “Sustainably out of the crisis. Analysis of possible contributions of an ecological financial reform ”and the“ Recommendation on consumption and sustainability. How sustainability can be bought and lived in the consumer society ”. In 2009 the Council organized the work on a critical analysis of German sustainability policy, an international peer review on behalf of the Federal Chancellor. This resulted in the report “Sustainability - Made in Germany. We know you can do it ". A new peer review process for the sustainability strategy started at the beginning of 2013. The council discussed the “ German Sustainability Code ” publicly and tested and developed it in a practical phase together with representatives from companies and the capital market. The new transparency standard describes the core requirements of sustainable management in twenty criteria and makes them comparable with a selection of quantified indicators. The latest political recommendations of the council call for binding energy efficiency, a stabilization of the financial markets, an agricultural turnaround based on the model of sustainability and the development of a circular economy for strategic raw materials as well as an opinion on land use. In March 2011, the council tested “Dialoge_Zukunft_Vision2050”, a new format for social dialogue on long-term politics.
Since 2010, he has been accompanying the “Sustainable City” Dialogue initiative, for which over 20 mayors from German cities have come together. The municipal representatives are particularly committed to sustainable development in their cities, exchange experiences and meet regularly in order to strengthen sustainable urban development as a political concern also at the federal level. The “Werkstatt N” quality label, also developed by the council, has been awarding around 100 projects every year since 2010. Since 2017, these have been recognized under the name “Project Sustainability”. The extraordinary projects that are particularly sustainable in their commitment are allowed to carry the label for one year and are also presented on a website. The Sustainability Council awards the title "Social Entrepreneur of Sustainability" and invites you to academic Carl von Carlowitz lectures. In February 2013 he organized a youth conference under the motto "Contemporary Carlowitz". As part of the three-day gathering of 50 young people and young adults with a wide variety of biographies and interests, they formulated an impulse paper with demands to the federal government for sustainable development.
The council's publications include a bi-weekly newsletter (“News Sustainability”) and the shopping guide “The Sustainable Shopping Cart. Simply shop better ”, which deals with the everyday buying decisions of individuals and is published annually. Opinions, recommendations and studies on sustainability issues are also published regularly.

history
At the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro (1992), 178 countries decided on Agenda 21, a program of action for sustainable development for the 21st century. As a reaction at the national level, the federal government at the time created the RNE and appointed its first members in February 2001. On April 4, 2001, under Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, the council was officially set up in Berlin to advise the government on its sustainability strategy. The federal government published this a year later.
After a kick-off event on September 28, 2001, annual conferences are held regularly. While around 600 participants attended the event in 2002, the number has meanwhile more than doubled.
