The Division 1 1974-75 was the 37th staging of the professional French football league. Champion was the AS Saint-Etienne , which was able to defend her title and since the eighth time in 1957 Champion de France was.
The first game day was August 2, 1974, the last game day was June 3, 1975. There was a three-week “winter break” from December 23 to January 11.
societies
Eligible to participate were those clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 17th, as well as three direct promoters from the second division . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:
- two clubs from the far north ( Racing Lens , OSC Lille ),
- four from Paris and Champagne (the two newly promoted Red Star FC and Paris Saint-Germain , Stade Reims , Troyes Aube Football ),
- three from the northeast ( FC Metz , Racing-Pierrots Strasbourg-Meinau , FC Sochaux ),
- four from the west ( Stade Rennes , FC Nantes , SCO Angers , Girondins Bordeaux ),
- six from the southeast (defending champions AS Saint-Étienne , Olympique Lyon , Olympique Nîmes , Olympique Marseille , OGC Nice , AS Monaco ),
- one from Corsica ( SEC Bastia ).
Season course
The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement. The bonus scheme introduced in the previous year was retained with one change; Each team received an additional point for every game they won by at least three goals. This should promote attacking football.
This season, the French public was more interested in Saint-Étiennes Parcours in the European Cup than in Division 1 games , in which the "Greens" made a disastrous start. After eight game days, the defending champion's account showed six points behind the surprise leaders Reims; for the red-whites from Champagne , their striker Bianchi single- handedly turned a 0-1 deficit against Paris SG into the final score of 6-1 on the second matchday. In the further course of the first half of the season, however, Saint-Étienne and his main rival from Marseille straightened things out again, and only Bastia was able to keep pace with them until the beginning of 1975. But when Ferdinand Heidkamp's defensive support was unable to participate in the game in Lyon, a hefty 8-1 defeat caused the Corsican to slip in the table. Saint-Étienne, on the other hand, could not be thrown off course by the semi-final against Munich Bayern in the European Cup, especially since the pursuer despite his reinforcement by two Brazilian national players and world champions from 1970 ( Jairzinho , Paulo César ) and - during the winter break - Bereta from the "Greens" was by no means consistently confident. Three game days before the end of the season, ASSE was two points ahead of Marseille, but also had two catch-up games to play and defeated OM 4-1 in the top duel, which even gave them three more points.
Saint-Étienne then won three of his remaining four encounters clearly and was nine points ahead in the end. On the last day of the match, the old and new champions allowed themselves the “luxury” of putting their coach Herbin , who still had a player's license, back in the center of the defense. In the 5-1 victory over Troyes, he not only fulfilled his defensive duties with the usual strength, but also scored the last goal of the game. The team with the most powerful attack and the best defense in Division 1 also had a flawless home record: at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard they had won all 19 games. Since she had also secured the national cup again , she was in the end, as in the previous year, again winner of the doublé ; that a team wins both competitions twice in a row had never happened before in France. Runner-up Marseille, however, was not happy with his two Brazilians; Jairzinho (for one year) and Paulo César (three months) received long bans for assaulting a linesman in the quarter-finals against Paris .
For the following season , the relegated Angers, Rennes and Red Star were replaced by the second division AS Nancy , US Valenciennes-Anzin and Olympique Avignon , of which only the latter was an absolute newcomer to France's footballing "upper house".
