The clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 17th were eligible to participate, as well as two direct promoters from the second division and the winner of the relegation round . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:

Season course

The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement.

From the seventh matchday onwards, the Canaris from Nantes led the table and in the end had a ten-point advantage over their rival Bordeaux, one of the largest in the history of Division 1 . There had been three personal changes before the start of the season that made such a march to the title seem anything but likely: Playmaker Henri Michel had ended his career, Rampillon changed clubs and coach Vincent found a new challenge with the Cameroon national team . But Vincent's successor Suaudeau , until then head of the club's youth center and previously José Arribas and even long leading players of the club retained the "sporting signature" of his two predecessors, held on over two decades developed their own style of play (jeu à la Nantaise) fixed and built half a dozen of the latest generation of talent into the team. Nantes' initially most stubborn pursuer, Bordeaux, had to compete at Stade Marcel-Saupin immediately after the winter break , lost there significantly (0: 4) and then no longer posed a threat to Canaris , who continued to perform very confidently and who only played in 38 point games 29 goals conceded. With his sixth championship title, Nantes drew level with Stade Reims , was also in the final of the national cup competition , but once again missed  winning the doublé , as in 1966 and 1973 .

In the basement of the table, the away weakness decided on relegation: none of the three teams that were relegated to the second division - Tours failed in the subsequent barrages on the third division of Division 2  - had even won a single match in the opposing stadiums: Tours brought There are at least five draws there, Lyon on the other hand only three and Mulhouse even only two. For the following season , the direct climbers Stade Rennes and Sporting Toulon and Tours conqueror Olympique Nîmes returned to the top division.
