Regular season

mode

The twelve teams of the Elitserien each played five games against each other. Six teams played 28 home games and 27 away games, while the other teams played 27 home games and 28 away games. A team that was allowed to play more home games this season will have fewer home games in the next season, unless they are relegated.

Each team received three points for a win in regular time. In the event of a tie after regular time, extra time was played in which the winner received two points and the loser one point. Compared to the previous season, there was a shootout following a draw after the five-minute extension . Each team initially had three shooters, then in the event of a tie the knockout system continued. There were no points for a defeat in regular time. The best eight teams in the preliminary round reached the play-off series, while the last two teams in the Kvalserien had to play against the best four teams in the second-rate HockeyAllsvenskan for their place in the league. For the clubs in places 9 and 10, the season ended after the preliminary round.

HV 71 Jönköping celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2011. The game on December 11th against Linköpings HC was therefore played as an anniversary match in an open-air arena that could accommodate 20,000 spectators.
