The 2020/21 season of the Regionalliga Nord is to be the 38th season of the Regional Football League North and the 13th season of the Regional Football League as the fourth-highest division in Germany. The opening with the game of the season south between Hannover 96 II and SV Atlas Delmenhorst is scheduled for September 4, 2020. For the first time, 22 teams will take part in the game.
The organizing NFV divided the field of participants, enlarged to 22 teams, into two relays. The participants in each group play against each other in return games. The 10 teams with the best points then play in a “champions group” in a simple round of points for participation in the promotion games against the Bayern champions. The remaining 12 teams, however, play in the "relegation round" to stay in the league. This is to avoid having to play 42 game days. The division of the squadrons also took place at the request of the clubs according to regional criteria. The northern relay consists of the teams from Schleswig-Holstein (5) and Hamburg (4) as well as the two northernmost clubs from Lower Saxony ( SV Drochtersen / Assel and Lüneburger SK Hansa ). The south season, however, consists of the remaining Lower Saxony clubs (9) and the two teams from Bremen .
The promoters from the subordinate upper leagues had already been announced in advance; However, three of them still have to meet conditions before the start of the season in order to obtain a license.
The six worst teams of the two seasons play the relegated teams in a relegation round in the respective upper leagues 2021/22 . The number of relegated members has not yet been determined.
The points and goals scored in the group phase by teams against opponents in the championship or relegation round are taken over to maintain the sporting value; Participants who met in the group stage no longer play against each other
