This article covers the German women's national soccer team at the 2019 women's soccer World Cup in France . Germany took part in the final round for the eighth time, for the first time not as reigning European champions . The team was eliminated for the third time in the quarter-finals and thus missed the qualification for the 2020 Olympic Games.

qualification

After the Olympic victory in 2016 , Steffi Jones took over the team that had already qualified for the 2017 European Championship , but failed there with the team in the quarter-finals. After that, Anja Mittag announced her resignation, at the time the team's best active goalscorer with 50 goals. Opponents in the qualification were Iceland , the Czech Republic , the Faroe Islands and Slovenia for the first time . The group winners would qualify directly, the group runner-up would be qualified for the playoff games for another World Cup starting place if he were one of the four best runners-up in the group.

The German team met Slovenia in their first game and won 6-0. Here made Simone Laudehr her 100th cap, which was previously not used one year due to injuries. Three days later it was only enough to win a difficult 1-0 win in the Czech Republic, helped by an own goal by a Czech player. In the third game, the team lost 2: 3 against Iceland and thus for the first time after 14 victorious games against this opponent, as well as a home game in a World Cup qualification for the first time. The team fell back to third place in the table, but was able to recapture the top position four days later with an 11-0 win against the Faroe Islands, in which Hasret Kayikçi scored the last four goals, with simultaneous point sharing between Iceland and the Czech Republic. A week after the team had not won the SheBelieves Cup 2018 and had taken last place, national coach Steffi Jones was released from her duties. Horst Hrubesch initially only took over the position of women's national coach for the two qualifying games in April. His assignment was later extended, however, as the assumption of office by the designated successor Martina Voss-Tecklenburg , at the time still coach of Switzerland, should only take place after the World Cup qualification. Under Hrubesch, the remaining four qualifying games were won without conceding a goal, including the second leg in Iceland 2-0. The DFB selection had won the direct comparison against Iceland due to the more goals scored, so that one point in the last game against the Faroe Islands would have been enough for direct qualification. Since the Icelanders did not win the second game against the Czech Republic either, Germany was group winners by four points and Iceland also missed the playoff games of the best runners-up in the group for the last European World Cup starting place.

A total of 27 players were used, none of whom took part in all eight games. Leonie Maier made seven appearances, Linda Dallmann , Svenja Huth , Alexandra Popp , Lea Schüller and goalkeeper Almuth Schult , who was replaced once due to an injury and then could not play two games , each had six appearances .

With 38 goals Germany scored the most goals of all European teams. The most goals for the German team were scored by Alexandra Popp and Lea Schüller (6 each) and Hasret Kayikçi , Lina Magull and Tabea Kemme (4 each). A total of 13 German players scored in the qualification. The team also benefited from two own goals by opposing players. Four players (Demann, Huth, Schüller, Simon) scored their first international goals in qualifying. Three players ( Turid Knaak , Nicole Rolser and Lea Schüller ) made their first international appearance in qualifying. Due to injury and illness, Simone Laudehr , Tabea Kemme, Dzsenifer Marozsán and Babett Peter , among others , only had four missions.

preparation

In preparation for the World Cup, the first test matches were held on October 6 in Essen against Austria (3: 1) and in November in Osnabrück against Italy (5: 2) and in Erfurt against Spain (0: 0). These were still contested under interim coach Horst Hrubesch , as the designated successor Martina Voss-Tecklenburg had to go to the playoffs with Switzerland, where the Swiss women ultimately failed to European champions Netherlands. Hrubesch's term of office ended on November 30, 2018.

The first step taken by the new national coach was a winter training camp from January 14 to 21, 2019 in Marbella , to which 30 players were invited, including some former national junior players. On February 28, 2019, Germany won 1-0 against World Cup hosts France in Laval with a goal from Lea Schüller . On April 6, the German team will play against Sweden in Solna , where they won the last European Championship title in 2013 . Three days later, Asian champions Japan were the opponents in Paderborn . Participation in the Algarve Cup 2019 and the SheBelieves Cup 2019 was waived in order to reduce the burden on the players who were also used in the UEFA Women's Champions League . The World Cup training camp in Grassau began on May 24th . A last test match was won 2-0 against World Cup newcomer Chile on May 30th in Regensburg .

Squad

The squad for the World Cup was announced on May 14th. In addition, Pauline Bremer , Lena Lattwein , Sydney Lohmann (instead of the injured Kristin Demann ), Felicitas Rauch and Lisa Schmitz also traveled to the training camp in order to be able to step in if they were absent due to injuries.

Venues of the German team

For the World Cup group draw that took place on December 8, 2018, Germany was allocated Pot 1 due to its placement in the FIFA world rankings of December 7, 2018. The team was therefore unable to face world champions USA or hosts France in the group games. The German team was the first team to be drawn from the lottery pots in France and thus set as the head of group B. The draw was drawn from Spain, the People's Republic of China and South Africa, newcomer to the World Cup.

China is the third most common opponent of the German team with 30 matches, so far there have been 16 wins, six draws and 8 defeats. At the world championships, the two first met each other: Germany won 1-0 in the semi-finals in 1995. The biggest win - at the same time the biggest international defeat for China - came in 2004 when Germany won the group stage at the Olympic Games 8-0. The last time they met in the quarter-finals of the 2016 Olympic Games was the German team who won 1-0 on their way to the gold medal. The last defeat was on March 1, 2006 with 0: 1 in Homburg . There have only been four games against Spain (two clear wins and two draws). The last time they met in November 2018 and split goalless. The German team has not yet played against South Africa. There was only one game of the juniors that was won 10-1 at the U-17 World Cup in 2010 . The current German national team players Melanie Leupolz and Lena Petermann (2 goals each) as well as Kristin Demann and Lina Magull and the South African national team goalkeeper Kaylin Swart and Jermaine Seoposenwe (1 goal) used had scored three goals for the South Africans on the way to France.

Knockout round

As group winners, the German team met African champions Nigeria in the round of 16, who qualified as fourth-best group third for this round. However, the Nigerians had to wait until the final whistle of the game between Chile and Thailand, which Chile won 2-0. The Chileans awarded a penalty in the final minutes and missed the last sixteen. If the Chileans won 3-0, Germany would have met Brazil in the round of 16.

Nigeria were already opponents of the German team in the first World Cup game in 1991, which they won 4-0. At the 2011 home World Cup, they both met in the second group game and Germany won 1-0. Against Germany, the Nigerians had to accept one of their three biggest defeats in November 2010 with 8-0.

Several players from both teams faced each other in the finals of the U-20 World Cup in 2010 and 2014. On the German side Almuth Schult, Marina Hegering, Svenja Huth, Turid Knaak, Dzsenifer Marozsán and Alexandra Popp (all 2010), Linda Dallmann, Sara Däbritz and Lina Magull (all 2014), on the Nigerian side Alaba Jonathan , Amarachi Okoronkwo , Osinachi Ohale , Desire Oparanozie and Ebere Orji (all 2010), Halimatu Ayinde , Chinwendu Ihezuo , Uchenna Kanu and Asisat Oshoala (all 2014). The German team won both games.
