John E. Seeley

John Edward Seeley (born August 1, 1810 in Ovid , New York , † March 30, 1875 ibid) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1871 and 1873 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Edward Seeley was born in Seneca County about two years before the outbreak of the British-American War . He attended the Ovid Academy . In 1835 he graduated from Yale College . He studied law . After receiving his license to practice law, he started in Monroe ( Michigan to practice). In 1839 he returned to Ovid. He held the post of supervisor there in 1842 . Between 1851 and 1855 he was a magistrate, guardianship and probate judge in Seneca County. Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party . In 1856 he took part as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia . In the congressional elections of 1870 for the 42nd Congress , Seeley was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 24th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded George W. Cowles on March 4, 1871 . He then resigned from Congress on March 3, 1873 . After his time at Congress, he went back to Ovid as a lawyer. He died there on March 30, 1875 and was buried on his farm near Ovid.
