Karl Geiger (born February 11, 1993 in Oberstdorf ) is a German ski jumper who competes for SC Oberstdorf . He has been part of the customs ski team since 2016 . His greatest successes so far are the world championship titles in ski flying 2020 in Planica , as well as in the team competition and in the mixed competition at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2019 . He also won the silver medal in the team competition at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. He finished third at the Four Hills Tournament 2019/20 .

Career

In March 2012 he was used for the first time in the second-rate Continental Cup in Kuopio, Finland . At the summer competition on September 16, 2012 on the newly built Sneschinka in Tchaikovsky , Russia , he jumped on the podium for the first time in third place in this competition. A week later, he was even able to take second place in Klingenthal, Saxony. In the end, it was enough for fifth place in the overall ranking of the Summer Grand Prix. Because of these successes, he was chosen for the World Cup opener on the last weekend of November 2012 in Lillehammer, Norwaynominated. There he could not only qualify for the competition, but also score points on both the normal hill (21st) and the large hill (30th). On December 9, 2012, he finished sixth at the World Cup in Sochi , Russia , his best result until February 2016.

At the Junior World Championships in 2013 in Liberec , Czech Republic , he was able to win the bronze medal in the team competition with the German team. In the individual, he finished seventh.

In the 2013/14 season Geiger celebrated his first World Cup podium with second place in the team competition in Klingenthal . In mid-February 2014 he won his first two Continental Cup competitions on the Inselbergschanze in Brotterode .

Werner Schuster nominated Geiger in December 2014 for the first time in the national group in the jumping for the Four Hills Tournament 2014/15 . In Oberstdorf , however, he was eliminated in the first round. A year later, in December 2015, Geiger was nominated again for the national group for the Four Hills Tournament 2015/16 . In Oberstdorf Geiger was able to prevail in the first round in the duel against Junshirō Kobayashi and achieved the first World Cup points of the 2015/16 season with 26th place . In Garmisch-Partenkirchen he succeeded in qualifying again, but failed in the first round and missed another entry into the second round.

On February 21, 2016 Geiger jumped from the normal hill in Lahti to second place in the competition and thus achieved his best World Cup result by December 2018. He finished the World Cup season in 30th place overall. In the Continental Cup he was able to jump three victories this season and he finished second in the overall standings behind the Austrian Clemens Aigner .

At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Geiger reached 10th place on the normal hill and 7th place on the large hill. Together with Stephan Leyhe , Richard Freitag and Andreas Wellinger , he won the silver medal in the team competition behind Norway and was awarded the silver laurel leaf on June 7, 2018, together with the other German medal winners . At the first World Cup station after the Olympic Winter Games in Lahti, he won with Markus Eisenbichler, Richard Freitag and Andreas Wellinger won the team competition and achieved his first World Cup victory. He finished the overall World Cup in 14th with 427 points, which was his best result until then. He finished the 2018 Grand Prix in second behind Russian Yevgeny Klimov , to which his first two victories in this competition in September 2018 on the Trambulina Valea Cărbunării in Râşnov, Romania, contributed.

Geiger at the 2019 World Cup in Seefeld

The 2018/19 season began for Karl Geiger with good placements among the top 10 in the first five competitions . At the competition that followed on the Gross-Titlis-Schanze in Engelberg in mid-December , Geiger won his first individual World Cup competition. At the Four Hills Tournament 2018/19 he could not confirm this result and finished eleventh overall. He was able to build on his success from Engelberg with his second World Cup victory on February 16, 2019 on the Mühlenkopfschanze in Willingen as part of the Willingen Five . In the overall ranking of the Willingen Five, he finished third behindRyōyū Kobayashi and Piotr Żyła . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2019 he won the silver medal behind his teammate Markus Eisenbichler on the large hill in Innsbruck on February 23, 2019 . The following day he won the world championship in team jumping on the same hill with Richard Freitag , Stephan Leyhe and Markus Eisenbichler. After he got off the Toni-Seelos-Olympiaschanze at the normal hill competitionIn difficult conditions after the first round he was ranked second, Geiger only jumped 92.5 meters in the second round and finally landed in 18th place. The sporting director of the German team Horst Hüttel criticized the jury for not intervening: “The second round was completely irregular. If that is not irregular, then I no longer understand the world. There is competition management for this. They failed miserably. "The German national coach Werner Schuster also said that the result was unfair due to the weather conditions:" The athletes Geiger and Kobayashi, they were kidnapped today. They would have deserved a medal. ”As the final jumper in the mixed team competitionhe won his second gold medal together with Katharina Althaus , Markus Eisenbichler and Juliane Seyfarth .

Geiger presented himself in top form at the start of summer 2019 . After finishing sixth in the first Grand Prix competition in Wisła , a week later he won both the mixed team competition with Juliane Seyfarth, Agnes Reisch and Richard Freitag and the individual competition from the Rothaus-Schanze in Hinterzarten , as well as the individual competition in front of Gregor Schlierenzauer and teammates Friday. After further good results, Geiger took fifth place in the overall ranking, making him the best German. He was able to do this in October at the German Championships on the large hill of the Vogtland Arena, which is covered with plastic mattingconfirm in Klingenthal with the well-deserved championship title. He was also German champion with the Bavarian team. As a result, Geiger entered the 2019/20 World Cup season with high expectations . In fact, he turned out to be by far the most stable DSV eagle in the first third of the season. He jumped on the podium in both Nizhny Tagil and Engelberg . In addition, he always reached the top 10 in the first seven competitions, which otherwise only succeeded the Japanese Ryoyu Kobayashi . Against this background, Geiger was one of the favorites for the Four Hills Tournament 2019/20 . When jumping home in OberstdorfGeiger presented himself unimpressed by his new role as a German hope and took second place behind Ryoyu Kobayashi. After finishing second in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , Geiger suffered a first setback in Innsbruck . Geiger only finished eighth, fell behind in the overall standings and was disappointed afterwards: “In the first run in particular, it didn't go as it should - it wasn't exactly the finest blade, but when these conditions were added . ”At the end of the tour he finally secured third place in the overall tour ranking with another second place on the Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze in BischofshofenDawid Kubacki and Marius Lindvik . A few days later, Geiger achieved his third World Cup victory on the normal hill in Predazzo , with which he wore the yellow jersey of the World Cup leader for the first time in his career the next day. On March 1st, 2020 Geiger won the 1000th World Cup competition on the Salpausselkä ski jump as part of the Lahti Ski Games . He finished second in the overall World Cup ranking behind Stefan Kraft, making him the seventh German in history to reach the podium in the overall World Cup. In summer 2020 hardly any competitions were possible due to the COVID-19 pandemic , so Geiger only took part in the German championships in 2020took part in an official competition in Oberstdorf. Although he was unable to defend his title from the previous year, he was already in good early form in third place.

Private

Geiger studied energy and environmental technology at Kempten University . He successfully completed his studies at the end of December 2019 as a "Bachelor of Engineering". His hobby is paragliding. He is not related to the German ski racer Christina Ackermann (nee Geiger), who is also a member of SC Oberstdorf, whereas the Nordic combined skier Vinzenz Geiger and Karl Geiger are distantly related through the paternal line.
