Martin Garrix (born May 14, 1996 in Amstelveen ; real name Martijn Gerard Garritsen ) is a Dutch DJ and music producer who had his international breakthrough in 2013 with the song Animals . Since the beginning of his career he has been active in the fields of electro and dirty house music, but since 2015 has increasingly represented more melodic variants of electro house and future bass . He is also known by his other artist names GRX (Big Room), YTRAM (Deep & Bass House) and Area21 (in collaboration with rapper Maejor Ali ; Future-Bass, Hip-Hop).
Career

Martin Garrix learned to play guitar from the age of four. When he was eight years old, he decided to become a DJ one day after seeing Tiësto at the Athens Olympics . Garrix graduated from the Herman Brood Academy, a specialized school for music production.
2012: musical beginnings
In order to gain a foothold in the music business, Martin Garrix produced a track as a ghost producer. As he revealed to DJ Magazine in 2013, this song, whose name he is not allowed to say, was released by Spinnin 'Records and became a huge hit. "They [Spinnin 'Records] found out that I did it and invited me into their office and I played them my other stuff," Garrix said in the interview. He was then signed to Spinnin 'Records. First, the solo single Keygen followed in September 2012 . Together with Julian Jordan , Garrix released the track BFAM in November 2012 . In the same year he also produced a remix for Christina Aguilera of the song Your Body , which was released on the deluxe version of her album Lotus, and a remix for Roy Gates' title Midnight Sun 2.0 .
2013: Musical breakthrough, Animals & Wizard
In February 2013, Martin Garrix released the track Torrent with Sidney Samson , which was released on the Musical Freedom label, a sub-label of Spinnin 'Records. In March Garrix released two tracks: a remix of the song Stellar by Daddy's Groove, and a collaboration with Jay Hardway called Error 404 . A few weeks before Martin Garrix's second solo single Animals was released, another track, which was created in collaboration with TV Noise and is called Just Some Loops , was released. The Martin Garrix remix of Project T , a track by Sander van Doorn , Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike , was released at the end of September .
He achieved commercial success with his second solo release Animals . The single was released on June 17, 2013 and rose to number 3 in the Dutch charts . It reached number 1 in Belgium and Great Britain. Animals also established itself as a hit in other European countries . It reached the top 5 in Switzerland, France, Germany, Austria and Sweden. Furthermore, the song was able to achieve a placement in the USA and was awarded a total of seven platinum and two gold records.
Since Garrix was accused of not having produced Animals himself, the latter saw himself compelled to show in an almost 70-minute video how he made the track. In another video from Future Music Magazine, in which the Dutch DJ explains how he produced his hit single, you can see that he uses partially cracked software, which again earned him some criticism. According to Martin Garrix, the melody in Animals is based on one of his old tracks that he never released. In addition, the title is inspired by the song What It Is by the American rapper Busta Rhymes . To Animals released remixes by Grum , Victor Niglio, Isaac, Oliver Helden , Jay Ronk, Dirtys and Botnek.
On December 2, 2013, Martin Garrix released the single Wizard with Jay Hardway . After just a few hours, the song was in the top 10 of numerous iTunes charts, including number 4 in Germany and number 7 in Great Britain. The track also climbed high in the official singles charts, including 6th place in Belgium, 4th place in Scotland, 7th in Great Britain and other top 100 positions in over 15 countries. In Sweden the duo received a gold record. The official music video of the big room track was viewed over 120 million times within a year. "Spinnin '" announced that no previous release had advanced to # 1 on the Beatport charts as quickly as Wizard . Remixes contributed among others Twoloud , Tchami, Mike Hawkins, Yellow Claw and Tom & Jame.

2014: collaboration with other artists, further successes
With its Edit version of Bassjackers -tracks Crackin Martin Garrix went into the new year. With his new single Helicopter , which was released on February 17, 2014 together with Firebeatz , Martin Garrix was initially unable to build on his successes with Animals and Wizard . The single reached number 59 in the charts in the Netherlands, number 98 in France and number 33 in Belgium. In Germany, Switzerland and Austria it was not enough for a chart position.
On March 5th a new solo release by Martin Garrix was released. Proxy was offered for free download on its SoundCloud page. Garrix wanted to thank his fans for their support in 2013. At the end of March he performed at the Ultra Music Festival 2014 in Miami. He presented some new songs that will be released in the course of the year. These include works with Afrojack and Dillon Francis .
On April 21, 2014, Tremor was released , a joint single with Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike . After a few days it reached number 1 on the Beatport charts and was able to score highly with high placements in download portals such as iTunes. Tremor developed into one of the most famous big room songs ever. With Gold Skies , Sander van Doorn , Martin Garrix and DVBBS released another track in June that hit the Beatport charts.
In the first months of 2014 it became known that in addition to Tiësto , Martin Garrix would also be included in the line-up of the program "BBC Radio 1's Residency". On May 1, Garrix completed his first broadcast on BBC Radio 1 . Until December 4, 2014, he reported monthly in his hour-long broadcast with “energetic party music and the latest exclusive tracks from the studio”.
After Crackin ' , another edit version of Garrix was released on July 7, 2014, this time with the track Backlash by DubVision . At the end of July 2014 Garrix uploaded a preview of the title Turn Up The Speakers , which was created in collaboration with Afrojack , to Soundcloud. The release date was August 25, 2014. For a few days, the single reached number 1 in the Beatport Top Ten.
Martin Garrix and MOTi announced their new Track Virus in mid-September with an unusual PR campaign . Tweets were posted on the two artists' Twitter account, suggesting that the DJs and producers may have been hacked. However, code-style text flickered on the Garrix website announcing the release date, October 13th. In addition, a URL led to an hour and 40 minute video on YouTube that only showed a sequence of numbers written in computer style. In October 2014, Garrix narrowly missed making it into the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs Top 3 and landed on rank 4.
2015: Musical realignment
Beginning of 2015: Style change & UMF appearance
After the song Virus , Martin Garrix began to present himself in 2015. On January 24, 2015, Danny Howard played the premiere of Forbidden Voices on the British radio station BBC Radio 1 , which has strong melodic influences and did not correspond to his previously typical big room style. The song was offered for free download on February 7, 2015 as a thank you for 10 million Facebook likes. At the same time, Martin Garrix also received a new logo.
At the beginning of March 2015 a collaboration with the US singer Usher was announced. The release took place on March 17, 2015. A live recording of Don't Look Down appeared on the Internet weeks beforehand . At first it was assumed that the vocals came from the Swedish pop singer John Martin . Furthermore, the style of music was compared early on with that of the producer Kygo . Just a week after its release, the song was in the top half of the charts in numerous countries, including Germany, Austria and the Netherlands. The official music video showed over a million views after just 24 hours.
During his appearance at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami in late March 2015, Martin Garrix played several unreleased new songs. In particular, a track he produced in the future house style together with Justin Mylo , which is circulating on the Internet under the name Bouncybob , and the long-awaited song Rewind Repeat It , which was released in the middle of 2014 in collaboration with the British singer- Songwriter Ed Sheeran was announced and was responsible for numerous rumors. Furthermore, the moment Garrix appeared live on stage during Tiësto's set and they played their upcoming single The Only Way Is Up together, sparked conversation. At the beginning of April 2015, Garrix spoke again for the first time about the long-awaited collaboration with David Guetta and announced which track from his Ultra Music Festival set it was. Before that, however , the track Waiting for Love , produced with the Swedish DJ Avicii , was released on May 21, 2015 , which was wrongly assumed for a long time that the vocals would come from the American singer-songwriter John Legend . Although Garrix was not mentioned as usual with the Avicii singles, the title made its way through the Internet as a collab and became a great success. They reached number one in Sweden and the top 10 in Denmark, Austria and his home country, the Netherlands.
At the end of August 2015, Garrix released his long-announced remix of the song Can't Feel My Face by Canadian rapper The Weeknd on SoundCloud. Several recordings of his live performances in which he played this song had already appeared in advance. At first, the remix was very deep house-heavy, but was heavily reworked because Garrix wanted to make the remix more aggressive. In retrospect, it was strongly compared to the style of the producer MOTi, but the track was received positively. A remix video was also released on YouTube showing scenes from his set at EDC Las Vegas along with parts of the official music video from The Weeknd. A single release was not announced and not planned in advance.
End of 2015: Separation from "Spinnin 'Records"
On August 27, 2015 Garrix announced via Instagram that his collaboration with his management team "MusicAllstars Management" and the label " Spinnin 'Records " had ended, but that he was already working on new projects. Garrix announced that he had lost almost all rights to his songs through the 360 ° contracts . An attempt to buy them back, as Steve Angello did last year at Columbia , failed. Furthermore, the contracts were also to blame that Garrix 'collaboration on Aviciis hit track Waiting For Love was not mentioned on the single. According to his detailed Instagram statement, his American manager Scooter Braun does not seem to be affected by the separation and his PR agency “The Media Nanny” is also not mentioned. After separating from Spinnin 'and signing a contract with the Swiss company TAG Heuer , the Ultra Music Festival 2015 aftermovie was released in which he presented a new production. The song spread across the internet under the title Don't Crack Under Pressure , as a commercial with the same motto was released by TAG Heuer. The track was very well received and rumors quickly arose about when it would be released. At the beginning of February 2016, Martin Garrix announced on his Facebook page that he had recorded a vocal version of this song together with John Martin and Michel Zitron, the singer of Tiëstos Red Lights . In mid-November 2015 Garrix released his long-awaited remix of Can't Feel My Face by The Weeknd as a single on "Universal Music". He also announced on Facebook that his collaboration with Justin Mylo and the 16-year-old Mesto will be released as a free track on December 31, 2015. Bouncybob was the second free track in a row. The Future House song has been expected since its appearance at the Ultra Music Festival in May 2015. Meanwhile, a remake on YouTube became very popular and received almost a million clicks as a supposed original.
2016: Stmpd Rcrds
Early 2016: from house to future bass
On March 11, 2016, the collaboration with John Martin and Michel Zitron was finally released under the title Now That I Found You . The track was able to surpass the success of his last songs and reached the download charts of several countries within a very short time. It also presents the first release of its own record label " Stmpd Rcrds ". The name is based on the English word "Stamp", which stands for " Postage Stamp ". He was inspired for the name by his father, who worked for a stamp marketing agency. When he performed at the Ultra Music Festival in March 2016, he played a wide variety of new songs, including productions with Bebe Rexha , Avicii and the long-awaited track Spotless with Jay Hardway .

On April 1, 2016, Martin released the song Spaceships as a free download on his record label . The Lovetrap song appeared under the pseudonym "Area 21", behind which he hides together with the rapper Maejor Ali . Another production with the project is called We Did It and was also premiered at the Ultra Music Festival. In mid-April 2016, the studio version of the song Waiting for Tomorrow , which was recorded by Linkin Park with producer Pierce Fulton and singer Mike Shinoda, leaked through unknown channels . Many of the uploads were deleted, but the distribution could not be stopped. On May 20th, another track from Area 21 called Girls was released.
In May 2016, the track Lions in the Wild, used as the intro of the Ultra set, was released and was praised by fans both for its vocals and for its unmistakable melody. The title was created in collaboration with the British duo Third Party. The song was able to reach the charts in France.
On June 13, 2016, the song Oops was released as a single. The release is based on the pattern of a promo single, as it appeared in the course of his video game. In addition to typical Martin Garrix elements, he was also based on stylistic means of soundtracks from games such as Super Mario . The video game itself is a modified version of Flappy Bird .
On July 29, 2016, the single In The Name Of Love was released, which was written and produced together with the US singer Bebe Rexha . In contrast to Garrix's other songs, this future bass is heavy with some elements of love traps. From a commercial point of view, the song took a bit of start-up time, but was then able to reach high chart positions, including the top 15 in Germany, the Netherlands and Great Britain. End of 2016: Seven-EP & DJ Mag "Nr.1 DJ"
During the course of the Amsterdam Music Festival, seven songs were released in one week, which made up the EP "Seven". WIEE started. After “Bouncybob” it is the second collaboration with the up-and-coming producer Mesto. The Sun Is Never Going Down was released as the second single from the EP. On October 19, 2016, Martin Garrix was named # 1 DJ in the world by DJ Mag magazine . This makes him the youngest DJ who has ever won first place in the DJ Mag Voting. The prize was presented to him by his mentor and three-time winner of the Dj Mag Top 100 Voting, Tiësto . The award ceremony took place in Amsterdam's famous Heineken Music Hall and was the opening ceremony of this year's Amsterdam Music Festival, which is the largest festival of the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE).
2017: Future-Bass and short "Return to EDM"
Early 2017: Worldwide success: Scared to Be Lonely
At the AVA New Year's Eve in Myanmar, Martin Garrix premiered a new Future Bass production. The song was assigned the title Scared to Be Lonely and the British singer Dua Lipa was suspected to be the vocalist. Both were confirmed by Garrix in mid-January 2017. In addition, a music video was shot for the first time since In the Name of Love . It was released on January 27, 2017. Within a week, the music video received more than 10 million views. The song started with similar success as In the Name of Love and reached the single charts of numerous European countries as well as the top 100 in the USA in the first week. On April 7, 2017, an acoustic version of the successful track was released on Garrix's YouTube channel, in which the Future Bass song was played with violins, guitars and pianos.
On April 7, 2017, Garrix released the song Byte . This was created in collaboration with the Dutch producer Brooks . He posted the lead sound of the song weeks beforehand in a live stream on Instagram. At this point in time, the track was still based on its earlier big room style, while the final version was based on character traits from Brooks' future bounce style. Martin Garrix called the track his "return to EDM ".
One week after Byte was released , Garrix performed at the Coachella Festival in Indio , USA. There he played a series of "IDs" and a mash-up of the original version and the Brooks remix of Scared to Be Lonely , for which he brought Dua Lipa on stage. A few days earlier they performed the song together at the O2 Ritz in Manchester.

Part of his premiered new productions from Coachella was the song There For You , which he played with the Australian singer, YouTuber and actor Troye Sivan . With the song Garrix continued his future bass style and quickly received positive feedback. Sivan and Garrix announced the title and release date on Twitter. The song was released as a single on May 27, 2017. In his homeland, the song moved into the top 20; in many other European countries the musicians managed to jump into the upper half of the chart. The music video shows both performers in San Francisco as well as during their joint live performance.
In mid-June 2016, Martin Garrix announced that the release of two singles would be imminent. On the one hand, the song We Did It is to appear with his project Area 21, on the other hand, the track Waiting For Tomorrow with Pierce Fulton and Mike Shinoda is about to be released. Regarding the final track, he announced that it would be released in late August 2017. The high-energy production was published on August 25, 2017 under the title Pizza . Not only the title, but also the style, which is peppered with orchestral elements, caused a positive sensation.
Autumn 2017: Another success with the DJ-Mag

On October 13, 2017, Martin Garrix published a second collaboration with the future bounce producer Brooks under his pseudonym GRX . This is called Boomerang and was originally a collaboration between Brooks, Breathe Carolina , Pillface and singer Jason Walker . However, since Breathe Carolina and Pillface were not convinced of the result, they withdrew from the project. Garrix, on the other hand, had been promoting the song since the first demo version was released, whereupon he and Brooks decided to finish the song together. A completely new break was created, while the drop corresponds to that of the first final version. Only a week later he released the track Forever as the fourth collaboration with the DJ duo Matisse & Sadko .
At the end of October 2017, Garrix was able to secure the award for the best DJ in the world for the second time in a row at the twentieth edition of the DJ-Mag elections.
In mid-November 2017, Garrix played a new version of the previously unreleased collaboration with David Guetta. New vocals were used here. Garrix announced on Twitter that Ellie Goulding did not want to publish the song, which is why a new singer was brought into the studio. The release is scheduled for December 2017 and the third Area 21 single should appear on the same day. Here the title was renamed from It Doesn't Really Matter to Glad You Came .
A documentary film is also scheduled to be published in 2017. This is to show Martin Garrix and DJ legend Carl Cox as the main actors with the title What We Started . Winter 2017: So Far Away
On December 1, 2017, the song So Far Away with David Guetta and the singers Jamie Scott and Romy Dya was released. The female part was adopted for the first demo version of the song by Ellie Goulding . In advance, similar to Rewind Repeat It , label disputes caused problems with the release. The main reason for this was that Martin Garrix played the song on his main stage set at Tomorrowland without the prior consent of Ellie Goulding's contractual partners. As a result, her management prohibited her further involvement in the track. Singer Romy Dya, who was already active on his record label through her collaboration with CMC $, stepped in for them. The song Glad You Came was also released on the same day . This was the fourth release with Maejor under the pseudonym Area21.
So Far Away became a commercial success in January 2018 . While it was in the lower half of the single charts in Germany for the time being, it made it into the top 10 of the German single charts towards the end of the month. Similar positions could also be achieved in Finland and the Netherlands.
2018: Appearance at the Olympia & well-known collaborations
Spring 2018: Like I Do
On February 22, 2018, Martin Garrix released another production with David Guetta. This is called Like I Do , for which Brooks was brought into the studio. Martin Garrix worked with the latter twice in the previous year on the songs Byte and Boomerang . Furthermore, Throttle, Talay Riley and Sean Douglas took part in the track. Although the track could not follow the success of So Far Away , on the other hand it also represented a much more club-friendly style. In total, the single charts of over 20 countries and record status in Great Britain, Canada and Italy, among others, were achieved. In an Instagram livestream, Guetta announced that she already wanted to share another idea with Garrix and Brooks.
On February 24, 2018, Martin Garrix performed as the closing act at the closing ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics . He describes Tiësto's performance of the same kind in Athens in 2004 as the performance that gave birth to his desire to become a DJ.
The song Game Over followed on April 20, 2018 , which was produced in cooperation with the Dutch Dutch and electro house DJ Loopers. The song is based on an EDM style and is Garrix's first instrumental release in 2018. In the US dance charts, the song advanced to number 44.
Summer 2018: Ocean & High on Life
After the collaboration was announced in October 2017 at the request of a fan, Garrix published a collaboration with the American rapper and singer Khalid on June 15, 2018 , who made a name for himself with Marshmello and the song Silence , among other things . The songwriter Giorgio Tuinfort, who was previously involved in various David Guetta productions, also took part in the creation. The track is titled Ocean and was given strong hit potential in advance. The track, characterized by pop and future bass, reached a top 10 position in Garrix's homeland and the top 20 in other new countries. The official music video appeared on the day of the release and was viewed over 100 million times within a few weeks.
After appearing on the first Tomorrowland weekend, Garrix announced that the closing track titled High On Life would be released the following weekend at the time of its set. Behind the song was a collaboration with the Swedish musician Kristoffer Fogelmark alias Bonn, which was co-produced by the Russian DJ duo Matisse & Sadko, with whom he had previously collaborated five times. After the song was released as a single on July 29, 2018, it achieved high views on numerous streaming and download platforms.
His collaboration with the Dutch hip-hop and future bass producer CMC $ was premiered in advance. The release of the song was announced for August 10, 2018. The final version also featured vocals from the Swedish electro-pop duo Icona Pop . The song is titled X’s and was released under its EDM pseudonym GRX, despite the future-bass-heavy style.
On August 12, 2018 he performed with Bondax, SG Lewis and many other artists at the Sunny Hill Festival in the Kosovar capital Pristina . The festival was organized by singer Dua Lipa and her father Dukagjin Lipa .
On September 14, 2018, Martin Garrix released his long-awaited second collaboration with Dutch producer Justin Mylo, who has been with him on his tour since 2017. The title was premiered last year and identified as the said collaboration. For the release, vocals were sung by the US singer-songwriter Dewain Whitmore. The musician was involved in the creation of Ocean in advance . Burn Out achieved a chart placement in all German-speaking countries as well as in his home country, making the song Justin Mylo's first commercial success.
Autumn 2018: BYLAW -EP & Dreamer
As of October 15, 2018, Garrix released five singles within five days with accompanying music videos as part of the release of the EP Bylaw . The title is made up of the names of the songs on the EP. After Martin Garrix published the cover of his first book in various social networks at the end of August 2018, it came onto the market in October 2018. It was entitled Martin Garrix Life = Crazy . It contains pictures taken during his career as well as pictures from his personal life.
In late summer, the Dutchman announced that he was currently working on a single with street musician Mike Yung , who became known through America's Got Talent . The song was released on November 1st, 2018. The previously unplayed song was titled Dreamer and was produced in a very calm style. Nicky Romero's remix , which had previously been played at various festivals, followed in early December 2018, after which the track was given greater attention in the EDM scene.
Winter 2018: Glitch
In collaboration with his buddy Julian Jordan, the EDM song Glitch was released on December 14, 2018 . The track achieved a placement in the Beatport Top 100 and several million clicks on Spotify. A black and white music video shows the two producers in portraits while the camera frantically changes its setting.
2019: No Sleep & Mistaken
On February 1, 2019, Martin Garrix released the song No Sleep , which was the sequel to High on Life . Here, too, Bonn contributed the vocals. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, among others, he advanced to the charts. At the same time, he repeatedly played a song called Mistaken on his live sets . Parallel to its appearance at the Ultra Music Festival 2019, the song was released with Matisse & Sadko and singer Alex Aris. Cooperation with UEFA & Drown
After the European Football Association UEFA announced Garrix as the official musician of the 2020 European Football Championship on October 18, 2019 , the Dutchman was supposed to provide the official opening music as well as the music for all official broadcasts in addition to the official song of the 2020 European Championship. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the final round had to be postponed by one year, the collaboration with Garrix will continue.
On February 27, 2020, Garrix released the song Drown , which was created in collaboration with the Norwegian singer-songwriter Clinton Kane. In his homeland, the pop song reached a place in the official singles charts. Remix versions contributed, among others, Nicky Romero and Alle Farben .
Advertising cooperations
In 2017, Garrix was the face of the marketing campaign for the fall-winter collection of the Italian fashion brand Armani Exchange . The announcement was made in July 2017 together with the publication of the advertising photos on his social networks. The commercial, in which the song Make Up Your Mind, Make Up Your Soul by him and Florian Picasso could be heard, was released in August 2017. In 2018 he presented the autumn-winter collection again in a commercial, which was accompanied by his Loopers collaboration Game Over . A behind-the-scenes video was also released. Garrix, he became an ambassador for the cosmetics brand AX , which launched a limited edition Martin Garrix body spray. This was first sold on September 14, 2018. Martin Garrix grew up with his parents Karin and Gerard Garritsen and his sister Laura (born March 13, 1998 ) in Amstelveen in the Netherlands, where he still lives today. Between 2013 and 2014 he was in a relationship with Lynn Spoor, known as a model and illustrator. In autumn 2015 he announced that he was dating the lifestyle blogger Sonja Horn. As of summer 2016, he was no longer associated with her. Since October 2016 rumors have been going around that he is in a committed relationship with model Charelle Schriek. However, he denied this in an interview with Radio 538 in early February 2017. After symbolizing a relationship with the singer Dua Lipa in the official music video for Scared to Be Lonely , pictures appeared in June 2017 that also suggested a private relationship.

Fuck Cancer
In May 2016 Garrix appeared as the face of an event in Los Angeles, all of which went to the non-profit organization "Fuck Cancer". Behind this is a company that is committed to the prevention and support of cancer sufferers.
Magic bus
In November 2016 Garrix started his India tour with a charity concert in Mumbai, which was attended by over 40,000 people. Martin Garrix organized another event on the Mahalaxmi racetrack, the proceeds of which were donated to the Magic Bus. This supports over 10,000 children across the country in the form of educational aid.
SOS Children's Village
On February 24, 2017, Garrix was announced as an "international friend" of the SOS Children's Village in South Africa. This is a non-profit organization that offers accommodation for orphaned, abandoned or other vulnerable children from all over the world. In an interview with Billboard, he said it was "bad" that "so many children from around the world had no support from a caring family."
