Equipped with superhuman strength Jessica Jones operates thanks to their espionage talent as a private investigator by making mostly Fremdgänger find while receiving other types of orders from the Attorney Jeri Hogarth. Jessica has suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and associated alcohol addiction since being mind controlled by a man named Kilgrave about a year ago . Her current case is about a dancer who is represented by Hogarth and who is to be compensated by Gregory Spheeris for an accident in the nightclub. To this end, Jessica Spheeris procures a summons and demonstrates her extraordinary strength. On a nightly tour of discovery, Jessica meets the bar owner Luke Cage , who pours her alcohol for free under the motto Ladies' Night and then sleeps with her. When Jessica sees the photo of a woman in Cage's apartment, she apologizes and leaves. After she is visited by the parents of the missing girl Hope Shlottman, Jessica investigates that leads to a terrifying discovery: Her psychological tormentor Kilgrave, whom she thought was dead, has returned and made Hope compliant. Jessica asks her friend, the radio host Trish Walker , for money to escape Kilgrave, but she persuades her to at least free the girl. Since Jessica recognizes the same steps as in her own abduction, she finds Hope alone in a hotel room, which she leaves only under duress. After reuniting with her parents, Jessica packs up to leave town with them and sends them into the elevator ahead. Without realizing that Kilgrave's manipulation is still going on, Jessica sees Hope draw a revolver and cannot prevent her from shooting her parents. When Cage confronts Jessica about taking pictures of him, she pretends to have been hired by Gina's husband, a woman he has a relationship with, whereupon Cage asks Gina, ignorant of their marriage. In her investigation into Kilgrave, Jessica visits the crime scene where Kilgrave was hit by a bus and apparently died. At the nearby hospital, she discovers that the ambulance with Kilgrave never arrived, which is why she pays the driver a visit and finds that he is tied to a dialysis machine and cannot be contacted after suffering a stroke . Back in her office, Jessica meets angry Gina, who accuses her that her husband has not hired her at all, but is now on the way to Cage with a few thugs. Jessica rushes to his bar and helps Cage with her strength, but notices that he too has supernatural strength and can easily hold back the attackers. Shortly thereafter, Jessica visits the doctor who is registered on the dialysis machine, who explains to her after an unsuccessful escape attempt that he, as the treating doctor in Kilgrave's ambulance, has been asked by the doctor to transplant the ambulance driver's two kidneys due to impending kidney failure. As the Doctor followed this under Kilgrave's watchful eye, Jessica realizes that anesthetic narcotics suppress Kilgrave's telepathic abilities, and with the Doctor's story, she wins Hogarth on to Hope's defense. While it is finally revealed that Trish Walker is secretly practicing self-defense, Cage awaits Jessica in her apartment and shows her that he has an impenetrable skin.

When Hogarth suggests to Jessica to show herself and other Kilgrave victims to the public in support of Hope's testimony, the helpful Trish organizes a live interview with Hope on the radio to make her more convincing. In view of Hogarth's ignorance of Hope's statements, Trish gets upset and insults Kilgrave, who immediately reports as an anonymous caller and indirectly makes it clear to Trish that he feels hurt by her insults. Shortly thereafter, Trish is visited by the policeman Will Simpson, who attacks her and knocks her down, whereupon Jessica rushes to help and the dazed Trish, in order to fake her death, administered the painkiller, which she meanwhile uses against Kilgrave with the help of a distraction from the hospital has stolen. The policeman, controlled by Kilgrave, sees his job as done and leaves the apartment with a mobile phone that can be tracked and placed by Jessica. This allows Jessica to follow him to an apartment, where she watches Simpson report to Kilgrave. When the latter instructs him to throw himself from the balcony, Jessica intervenes and stops him. Kilgrave sees Jessica, but before she can get to him, Simpson has to be completely incapacitated. In the pursuit of Kilgrave, Jessica faces up to several remote-controlled residents who ultimately prevent her from catching up with Kilgrave. Instead, Jessica finds a room full of pictures of her, which shows that she was under Kilgrave's observation the entire time. Sergeant Simpson, freed from Kilgrave, visits Trish's apartment because he suspects her corpse there, and is confronted with the living Trish, which is why Jessica informs him about his experiences. As a result of his willingness to stop Kilgrave, she asks him to provide her with public surveillance recordings in order to identify the secret photographer for Kilgrave. After Jessica persuades Trish to apologize to Kilgrave over the radio, Hogarth introduces Jessica to a number of people who came forward as a victim of Kilgrave after Trish's interview. During a survey, Jessica filters out those actually affected from among them and forms a group for mutual exchange of experiences. Jessica then devotes herself to shadowing Audrey's husband and follows him to his apartment, where Audrey awaits her with a gun drawn. As it turns out, she has had a hatred of talented people since the loss of her mother in the " incident " and wants to get revenge on Jessica by shooting at her. Jessica is so enraged that she is furious about the death of her own parents and ransacked the apartment and asked Audrey and her husband to leave town. Because of his guilty conscience, Simpson brings Trish a present to make amends, and after Trish breaks down her initial dislike for Simpson, the two start a conversation. Jessica shortly thereafter saved Malcolm Ducasse's life by saving him from two robbers, and was watched by Kilgrave, who, given her extraordinary abilities, quickly took her under his control. In the present, Jessica has come to the conclusion that Kilgrave turned Malcolm into a junkie and steadily provided him with drugs to allow him to take photos unobtrusively and to circumvent the time limit on his manipulation. While observing Malcolm, Jessica discovers that he meets with Kilgrave at the same time every day to swap pictures for drugs. Jessica shares her observations with Trish, and the two devise a plan to kidnap Kilgrave to prove Hope's innocence. Simpson, who has since entered into a relationship with Trish, also joins him and provides a van and an abandoned quarantine station for Kilgrave's safekeeping. The three wait for the next meeting between Malcolm and Kilgrave. When the time comes, Simpson shoots a tranquilizer projectile at Kilgrave, and Jessica carries his body to the van. The three drive away with the unconscious Kilgrave, but are stopped by a group of men who have tracked Kilgrave with a tracking device and rescue him after a short fight. A beaten prisoner explains to them that - contrary to Jessica's suspicion - they were not under Kilgrave's influence, but protected him on behalf of their security company. Jessica eventually locks Malcolm in her home for security and tries to get him off his drugs. When Kilgrave calls and offers to leave Malcolm alone if Jessica sends him a photo of herself every day, she reluctantly agrees.

reception

Marvel's Jessica Jones was positively received. According to Der Spiegel, the series “belongs to the best that is currently on TV” and named the main actress Krysten Ritter as a special highlight, who “balances her Jessica Jones brilliantly between demonstratively displayed contempt and painstakingly hidden vulnerability”. Giga.de especially praised the multi-layered character of the protagonist, who staggered "very well [...] between tortured victim, recalcitrant fighter, unbearable puke and courageous companion", and awarded the highest rating of 10 out of 10 points. Oddsmeter.de judged the series to be the best TV comic adaptation so far with "grounded, complex characters, a gloomy, gallant look and a high addiction factor [...]."

Marvel Comics history and references

The series is essentially based on the Marvel series Alias by author Brian Michael Bendis (2001-2004), in which Jessica Jones struggles as a private detective after a failed career as a superhero. The first scene in the series, in which Jessica rams an unruly client through the glass of her front door, pays homage to the opening pages of her debut comic book, Alias # 1 (2001). Bendis stated in later editions that her greatest trauma was brainwashing by the Croatian-born, purple-skinned master manipulator The Purple Man (real name: Zebediah Killgrave). He is introduced on the series as Kilgrave , who is from the UK, and in many appearances he either wears purple or is lit purple. Jones' relationship with her superhero colleague Luke Cage was thematized in both Alias and its follow-up series The Pulse (2004-2006), in which Jones and Cage fall in love, have a daughter named Danielle and finally get married. Patsy Walker (first appearance 1944) was the protagonist of a high school comic of the same name for a long time until she became the superhero Hellcat in 1976 . Both child abuse by her mother Dorothy and her appearances as a child star and teen starlet are an established part of her comic book past. The lawyer Jeri Hogarth is inspired by the character of Jeryn Hogarth from the Marvel comic Iron Fist , but in the series Hogarth is a lesbian woman. Cop Simpson is the reinterpretation of drug addict Marvel super villain Nuke , who swallows red pills to get aggressive. Malcolm is an obsessive superhero fan in the comics that Jessica reluctantly works with. Claire Temple is the implementation of the Marvel character Night Nurse , who appeared in the parallel series Marvel's Daredevil .

Comic for the series

In October 2015, the digital comic Marvel's Jessica Jones # 1 , which is a prequel to the series, was released. The comic also links the series to Marvel's Daredevil. In the comic, Jessica Jones tracks down the head of a drug ring that has failed to support his children. The man was badly beaten by Daredevil and is in the hospital, where Jessica takes his wallet from him in order to send the money owed to her client, the mother of his children.
