Matthias Zimmermann (2011)

Zimmermann first played at VfB Grötzingen before joining the youth team at Karlsruher SC in 2002 at the age of ten . There he went through all youth teams until he signed his first professional contract with Baden in 2009. Up until the winter break of 2009/10, Zimmermann was mainly used in the second team from Karlsruhe; since his professional debut on December 6, 2009 in the second division game of KSC against Rot Weiss Ahlen , he was a regular player. On November 28, 2010 Matthias Zimmermann scored his first professional goal in the game against Rot-Weiß Oberhausen .

For the 2011/12 season, Zimmermann and his teammate Lukas Rupp moved to Bundesliga club Borussia Mönchengladbach . There he made his first Bundesliga debut in the away game against Hertha BSC on the 12th matchday of the season when he came on for Patrick Herrmann in the 83rd minute .

Since he could not prevail in the first team, it was announced in December 2012 that he will be loaned to league rivals SpVgg Greuther Fürth from January 1, 2013 until the end of the 2012/13 season . He made his debut for the Franks on January 19, 2013 (18th matchday) in the 2-0 defeat in the away game against FC Bayern Munich ; he scored his first Bundesliga goal on May 11, 2013 (33rd matchday) in the 1: 2 defeat in the home game against SC Freiburg with the opening goal in the third minute.

For the 2013/14 season Zimmermann moved on loan to the second division club SV Sandhausen . At the same time, Borussia Mönchengladbach extended its existing contract until June 30, 2015.

For the 2015/16 season Zimmermann moved to the second team of VfB Stuttgart on a free transfer . He was appointed to the VfB Bundesliga team for the first time on May 2, 2016 against Werder Bremen and made his debut in the starting line-up. After relegation Zimmermann established himself permanently in the club's licensed team in the 2nd Bundesliga . On the final day of the second division season 2016/17 he brought the VfB at the 4: 1 win against Würzburger Kickers with a long-range shot which was also his first competitive goal for the Swabians in the lead. With this victory Zimmermann and his team secured the second division championship and the associated direct promotion. After tearing a cruciate ligament in his left knee in August 2017, he still received an offer from VfB Stuttgart to extend his contract, which was due to expire, through which Zimmermann tied himself to the club for another year until June 2019 on December 20, 2017.

For the 2018/19 Bundesliga season he signed a contract with the promoted Fortuna Düsseldorf , which was valid until 2020 and was extended to 2024 in August 2019.

National team

Zimmermann's international career began early on in the DFB's U15 national team. Since then, Zimmermann has also been used in the next higher age groups of the junior national teams. The highlight was the European championship title with the U17 national team in 2009 , as well as participation in the U17 World Cup in Nigeria in the same year .

Private

His older brother Christian (* 1987; † 2011) was also a soccer player. He died on the evening of February 16, 2011 after a friendly match between his club, the regional division club FC Alemannia Wilferdingen .
