Michail Michailowitsch Juschny ( Russian Михаил Михайлович Южный ; English Mikhail Mikhailovich Youzhny ; born June 25, 1982 in Moscow , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ) is a former Russian tennis player .

Career

In 1999 Juschny became a professional. In 2000 he reached his first quarter-finals on the ATP Tour in Moscow . In his first Grand Slam tournament , the Australian Open , he reached the third round in 2001. The first ATP Tour semifinals in Copenhagen followed . At Wimbledon he lost to Patrick Rafter in the round of 16 . At the US Open he reached the third round, in which he lost to Pete Sampras .

In 2002 Juschny secured his first ATP title, and he also led Russia to win the Davis Cup for the first time in the decisive match against France . When it was tied 2-2 after four games, he was nominated for the decisive final individual instead of Yevgeny Kafelnikow , who was playing out of shape . Although the game took place in France, he was able to defeat Paul-Henri Mathieu in five sets after a 2-0 set deficit . His teammates Kafelnikow and Marat Safin called him the “new tennis star of Russia” and the former President Boris Yeltsin , who traveled specially, congratulated him personally.

In 2003 Juschny finished in the top 50, in 2004 in the top 20.

In 2006 he reached the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time at the US Open . In the quarter-finals, he beat number two in the world, Rafael Nadal , in four sets. In the semifinals he was defeated by Andy Roddick , again in four sets.

In 2007 Juschny won the Rotterdam tournament . He also reached the final at the tournaments in Dubai , where he was defeated by Roger Federer , and in Munich , where he lost to Philipp Kohlschreiber . At the French Open he made it to the last sixteen, in which he had to admit defeat to Federer again. Juschny was also in the round of 16 at Wimbledon , where he was defeated by Rafael Nadal in five sets.

In 2008 he started the season with his fourth ATP tournament victory when he defeated Nadal 6-0, 6-1 in the Chennai final . At the following Australian Open he made it to the quarter-finals for the first time, in which he was defeated by the later surprise finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga . The following week, Juschny achieved his best ranking in the ATP world rankings with rank 8 .

In February 2010 he reached the finals in Rotterdam ; he had to give up the match against Robin Söderling in the second set due to physical problems. Right at the next tournament in Dubai he moved back into the final, but lost there after a tough fight with 5: 7, 7: 5 and 3: 6 against Novak Đoković . He then won his sixth individual title at the BMW Open .

On September 20, 2018, he ended his career after a loss in the round of 16 against Roberto Bautista Agut in Saint Petersburg .
