Montgomery County was formed on December 9, 1842 from parts of Hot Spring County. It was named after Richard Montgomery (1738–1775), a general in the American War of Independence .
Montgomery was the county seat from 1842 to 1850. In July 1850 the name was changed to Salem and in October of the same year to Mount Ida , after the post office of the same name. The final county boundaries were not established until 1925.
Around 1900, many miners and mining companies lost their money looking for gold, silver and copper. In 1904, a quartz mine was discovered in Fisher Mountain , which was later expanded because it was the right quartz for the oscillators in radio communications during World War II.
During the Great Depression (1929–1941), many families left this area in search of work.
