The 1949/50 NHL season was the 33rd season in the National Hockey League . Six teams played 70 games each. The Stanley Cup won the Detroit Red Wings after a 4-3 victory in the final series against the New York Rangers . In the semifinals, Gordie Howe was critically injured when an opponent evaded his check and let Howe go nowhere. The NHL protected its players in an extraordinary way. After Toronto's Cal Gardner injured Montreal's Ken Reardon in a game on January 1, he swore revenge. Reardon had to put $ 1,000 on bail. When he ended his career at the end of the season, he got it back.
