The Odense Boldklub (short: Odense BK or OB ) is a Danish football club in Odense , Region Syddanmark . The OB plays in the Superliga , the top division in Denmark. The home games are played in the Nature Energy Park . The club is based in Ådalen, close to Odense Å .

history

The first years

The club was founded on July 12, 1887 as Odense Criketklub , with cricket being the only sport. In 1889 football and tennis were added as other sports, and the club name was changed to Odense Boldklub .

The first success in football was celebrated in 1916 by winning the local championship. As a result, the team qualified for the semi-finals of the national championship, where they lost 9: 3 against the eventual champions B.93 Copenhagen .

1945 to 1975: turbulent times

After the reorganization of the Danish football leagues after the German occupation in World War II, Odense found itself in the third division. Due to good performances and the two outstanding players Jørgen Leschly Sørensen and Svend Jørgen Hansen, the team quickly reached the highest league in Denmark. Hansen was also Denmark's first international. Sørensen was sold to the Italian club Atalanta Bergamo in 1949 .

In 1951 OB won the silver medal in the national championship. You failed in the final at the Akademisk Boldklub . After this success, things quickly went downhill. In 1959 the team found itself back in the second division. In between 1957 and 1966 the promotion to the 1st division succeeded , but Odense never stayed long in the first division until 1975. In 1974 the team reached their first cup final which was lost 5-2 against Vanløse IF .

1975 to 1990: the best years

1975 Odense BK rose again to the top division. Under coach Richard Møller Nielsen and a very good team, OB won the first championship in 1977. Midfielder Allan Hansen was named the league's top goalscorer and player . Hansen was able to repeat these successes in 1981. By winning the championship, Odense took part in the European Cup for the first time in 1978 . There the team met Lokomotiv Sofia in the first round . The first leg ended 2-2. In the subsequent second leg, the Danes lost 2-1.

The winning streak continued for Odense. In 1980 OB was third and in 1982 they won the second championship. Together with winning the cup in 1983, the team even won the double . After the Boldklubben had to relegate to the second division in the same year in 1909, Odense was the best team on the island of Funen .

During this time OB was able to shine with many Danish talents. Keld Bordinggaard was named Young Player of the Year in 1982. The team's best player at this time was Lars Høgh , who played a total of 817 games for the club from 1977 to 1999.

In 1989 Odense became champions for the third time, this time under the new coach Roald Poulsen. Among the top performers were Høgh, Ulrik Moseby, Johnny Anker Hansen and Per Pedersen . This was sold to Blackburn Rovers in 1997 for the record fee of £ 2.3 million .

1991 until today: The super league

In 1991 the club was able to win the Danish Cup against Aalborg BK . This success could not be transferred to the Danish Super League . In the fall season, OB ended up in last place and had to participate in the qualifying league. With a second place, the team was able to qualify for the Super League again.

In the 1992/1993 season OB reached second place behind FC Copenhagen and achieved his third cup success. In 1996 the team was again third in the league.

At the end of the 1997/1998 season Odense BK had to relegate to the second division. The promotion succeeded a season later. In 2002 and 2007 the team won the Danish Cup and in the 2008/2009 season they finished second, OB's best result since promotion in 1999. In 2009/2010 they came second again.

European Cup balance sheet

The greatest international success achieved OB in the 1994/95 season. Starting only through qualification in the UEFA Cup , OB threw 1. FC Kaiserslautern out of the competition in the second round due to one more away goal. At home they played 0-0, in Kaiserslautern 1-1. In the second round, OB met Real Madrid and won a sensational 2-0 win at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu , so that despite a 2: 3 in the second leg in front of a home crowd, the quarter-finals were reached. Here OB narrowly failed against eventual UEFA Cup winners AC Parma with 0: 1 and 0: 0. In the 2006/2007 UEFA Cup season, the club threw German Bundesliga club Hertha BSC out of the competition in the first round with a 2-2 win at the Olympiastadion Berlin and a 1-0 win in front of their home crowd. In 2011/12 they narrowly missed the group stage of the UEFA Champions League . They won the first leg against FC Villarreal 1-0 in front of their own audience. In the second leg, however, they lost 3-0. This is the second time in a row that the team will start the group stage of the UEFA Europa League .
