Roger Penske (born February 20, 1937 in Shaker Heights , Ohio ) is an American businessman and owner of the automobile racing team Team Penske .

Career

In 1958 Penske began trading and racing in racing cars. He was very successful in both. He won a few races by 1965 and was voted Driver of the Year 1960 by Sports Illustrated magazine . Penske took part in two automobile world championship races and won a NASCAR race.

After the end of his active career, Penske initially concentrated on the economic side of his racing team and in the following years built up an international company empire based on commercial vehicles and car trading. From 1974 to 1976 he also used a team in Formula 1.

In the USA he sells the small car Smart from Daimler AG . Penske also planned to take over the Saturn auto brand from General Motors . This failed because Penske was unable to find an international partner for the takeover.
