action

Because half of New York City was destroyed after Newt Scamander's last visit abroad , the magizoologist was banned from traveling by the Ministry of Magic. In 1927 he wanted to ask a committee in London to be allowed to travel abroad again. Here he not only learns that the criminal Gellert Grindelwald, who he had caught the year before, was able to escape and is now in Paris , but also that Credence Barebone , believed to be dead , who still carries a dangerous obscurus, a powerful black energy, is still there is alive and also residing there. However, Newt refuses the condition that Newt should work for the Ministry of Magic in the department for which his brother Theseus also works if he wants to leave England again. So Grimmson takes on the task of tracking down the dark wizard and Credence in Paris.

Then Newt is visited by Albus Dumbledore, who persuades him to go to Paris, where Credence is looking for his family, despite his travel ban. Dumbledore does not know whether the young wizard with his obscurus is in danger or rather a danger to others himself. Newt receives an unexpected visit from his American friends Queenie Goldstein and Jacob Kowalski in his London apartment. From them he learns that Queenie's sister Tina is now with an Auror . After an argument with Jacob, Queenie leaves London and looks for her sister in Paris. Newt and Jacob follow her.

Grindelwald took an apartment in Paris by force while Credence works for a magic circus. There he made friends with Nagini, a prisoner Maledicta who is the attraction of the circus. Every night it turns into a snake until one day it won't turn back. Due to an incident caused by Credence, he and Nagini manage to escape. Tina is also there, where she is locked in a dungeon by Yusuf Kama, in which Newt and Jacob also find themselves shortly after their arrival.

Grindelwald gathers followers in Paris who are interested in his eerie ideology, to enforce the world domination of the pure-blood magicians with all violence and to rule over people. He believes that Credence is the key to their victory and that this could even succeed in killing Dumbledore. In search of his mother, Credence seeks out the half-elf Irma. Here he is tracked down by Grimmson, who kills Irma, whereupon Credence unleashes his obscurus.

Meanwhile, Theseus and his fiancée Leta Lestrange travel together with the head of the law enforcement agency Torquil Travers to the magic school Hogwarts , where they want to interrogate Dumbledore, who tells them about his special connection to Grindelwald. Leta was a student at the same time Newt was attending Hogwarts. In Paris, Jacob has now learned from the alchemist Nicolas Flamel that answers to many questions are hidden in the Père Lachaise cemetery and can be found in the grave of the Lestrange family. Newt and Tina, like Leta at the French Ministry of Magic, also heard about this place. When they all meet in the Lestrange family's crypt, Leta, who turns out to be Yusuf's half-sister, tells Credence the story of his origins. Still, she doesn't know who his real parents are. Meanwhile, Grindelwald is holding a meeting under the cemetery.

In his speech, he shows the pure-blood wizards gathered there from all over the world that the goals of non-magicians are not so noble. A future vision of World War II and an atom bomb underscores his speech. When aurors from the British Ministry of Magic appear at the meeting and want to arrest Grindelwald, the dark wizard conjures up a circle of demon fire that anyone who shares his mind can enter. However, his opponents are destroyed by this. This is how many Aurors find death. When Leta tries to take up the fight with Grindelwald, she too dies. Not only Credence enters this circle, Queenie also dares to take the step. Newt, his brother and Tina only manage to put out the demon fire together with Flamel's help before it destroys Paris.

During a visit to Hogwarts, Newt gives his former teacher Dumbledore a bottle that he was able to steal from Grindelwald with the help of his Niffler and which may be able to cancel the blood pact that the friends once made. Grindelwald has brought Queenie and Credence to Nurmengard Castle in Austria, where he tries to gain the affection of his protégé. There he also reveals Credence's real name: Aurelius Dumbledore.

Production history and staff

Johnny Depp , here at Comic-Con in San Diego in July 2018, plays the title role

In early August 2016, Warner Bros. confirmed , after JK Rowling had already announced this himself, that there should be a sequel to the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. David Yates should direct this too . Warner Bros. also announced that the sequel will delve deeper into the increasingly dark time for the magical world. In July 2016, it was announced that Rowling had already completed work on the script for the sequel. Yates said in September 2016, two months before the premiere of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them If the story continues, he already knows that America is not a forced place to stay. Only the first film in the series is played exclusively in the USA, but the sequels would also develop in other parts of the world. As part of a fan event on October 13, 2016, Rowling said that she was planning a total of at least five films in the series. In May 2017, she commented again on the completion of the script. In May 2017, she stated that Newt's Patronus would have something to do with the plot.

According to a statement by production designer Stuart Craig in April 2016, the second part of the film series would largely take place in Paris . Yates later confirmed this in the December issue of Empire magazine . In addition, the second part will also play in Great Britain and again in the USA . Eddie Redmayne will once again be seen in the role of the magical zoologist Newt Scamander in the film, but he should not necessarily be the focus of the plot, as producer David Heyman suggested at the end of November 2016. Credence Barebone should become a decisive figure in the story, and the younger Albus Dumbledore should also have an important role in the film. In addition, Gellert Grindelwald should act as the villain. According to current plans, the role of the animals in the second part should be smaller, but the appearance of a Chinese being that has not yet been precisely defined is planned. In addition, Eddie Redmayne revealed at the end of November 2016 that the titles of the sequels should follow a principle similar to the Harry Potter series and that the only thing the titles have in common is that they begin with Fantastic Beasts and the .... In November 2017 producer David Heyman said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly , reflecting Grindelwald crimes have from the first part distinguishes and on what points he should surpass its predecessor, one that this time with much more central figures worked as the first part, "The new film feels very different than the first. He has thriller qualities. And at the same time it is a story about love and passion in all its forms - parental, romantic, political. "He should also be more dynamic, the camera will be much more lively and more immersed in the action, Heyman continues:" It will be a much more contemporary one have a cinematic approach. "

Filming and film music

The Highgate Cemetery in London served the entrance to the grave chambers of the cemetery Pere Lachaise and the catacombs of Paris as a backdrop

Filming began on July 3, 2017 at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden , where large parts of the first film in the series had already been shot. In October 2017 the film was shot for four days in Highgate Cemetery in London. In the film, the recordings served as a backdrop to the entrance to the Paris Catacombs . Shooting ended on December 20, 2017. As in the first part of the series, Philippe Rousselot acted as cameraman . Like its predecessor, Colleen Atwood was responsible for the costumes .

The score was again composed by James Newton Howard . The soundtrack for the film, which comprises a total of 25 pieces of music, was released by WaterTower Music on November 9, 2018.

Marketing and Publishing

In early October 2017, Warner Bros. provided the first footage for the film. This showed an exit permit applied for by Scamander, which was rejected. This application also shows his home address in Old Sherringford Square, London. In November 2017, the official title of the film Fantastic Beasts: Grindelwald's Crimes was announced. A first trailer for the film was presented in mid-March 2018. At the end of May 2018, the cover image of the film script was published, which shows the Eiffel Tower as a central element, but also the Niffler and the symbol for the three Deathly Hallows . A second trailer followed in July 2018 as part of the San Diego Comic-Con International . The final trailer was released on September 25, 2018.

The film celebrated its world premiere on November 8, 2018 in Paris and was shown in German cinemas on November 15, 2018 and in Austrian and US cinemas the following day. In Saudi Arabia, the film was also shown from November 15, 2018, making it one of the first films to hit theaters there in decades after movie theaters had been banned in the country in the 1980s. The film has been available digitally in the USA together with a seven-minute longer Extended Cut since February 15 and on Blu-ray since March 12, 2019 . In Germany it was released on April 4th on Blu-ray, DVD and UHD Blu-ray , with the extended cut only being available on Blu-ray in the original English language.

reception

Age rating

In the US, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA . In Germany, he was released from the age of 12 , allowed from 6 years if accompanied by his parents. In the justification for the release it says: “The film is staged at high speed and contains some fight and tension scenes. He works with a good-evil scheme that is easy for children to understand. Otherwise, children from the age of 12 have no problems following the plot and classifying it as an unreal fantasy story . Even the dark and threatening scenes with the villain Grindelwald are within a framework that does not overwhelm viewers from the age of 12. "Sebastian Ossowski from IGN notes that Fantastic Beasts 2 is not a children's film :" Unlike the start of the original Harry Potter - Series , Grindelwald's crime is aimed at an adult audience. A multitude of characters bless the temporal and the film is also not at a loss for one or the other cruel death. "

Reviews

Overall, the film received mixed feedback from the critics. So far he has been able to convince 37% of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes and received a Metascore of 53 out of 100 possible points on Metacritic .

The film critic Antje Wessels explains that when lightning flashes and the rain is pouring down from the sky, while Grindelwald disappears into the darkness regardless of losses, then one suspects that the film title Grindelwald's crimes was not chosen without care: “It's about the atrocities of a felon, the dimensions of which may not yet quite reach that of a Lord Voldemort. "

Wenke Husmann from Zeit Online remarks that while the author managed to invent a coherent story about a handful of characters in the first part, she neglects them almost lovelessly in the second part and instead fables herself deeply into the genealogies of several supporting characters. The whole network was then split up for the director during the staging, Husmann continued.

Jude Law plays the young Albus Dumbledore in the film

Geoffrey Macnab of the Independent says, like his predecessor, The Crimes of Grindelwald had some very dark moments that drove him into the realm of Fritz Lang-esque film noir . Director David Yates and his team showed how virtuoso their craftsmanship is, and the film is characterized by an astonishing level of visual detail and ingenuity. The only downside is that JK Rowling has added so many different characters and subplots that the narrative flow is sometimes lost. The viewer is sent from New York to London and then on to Paris, and in a montage one looks into the future, where one has a view of the Second World War and atomic bombs. Despite recent events in his private life, Johnny Depp is still an excellent film actor, and his portrayal of Grindelwald revives memories of his old mentor Vincent Price in some of his more unusual roles: “White-haired, soft-spoken and very pale He dresses in black skin and looks like a new romantic pop star from a distance . In his restraint and his calm malevolence he is the absolute contradiction of Depp's Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean films. "

Hannah Pilarczyk from Spiegel Online also thinks that the film suffers from too many side stories and from problems with which adults can hardly begin. Jude Law makes up for a lot as Albus Dumbledore, Pilarczyk continues: “Law, charismatic as it has not been for a long time, designs Dumbledore not only as a man with an already respectable history, but also as a man with desire. This complicates his feelings and motivations and makes him the only real adult figure in the ensemble. If you wanted to raise your hopes for the third part of the series, they would hang on him. "

Gross profit

On the opening weekend, Fantastic Beasts: Grindelwald's Crimes made it to the top of the North American cinema charts with a grossing of 62 million US dollars , whereas its predecessor managed to bring in 74 million US dollars during this period. In Germany, around one million viewers saw the film within the first few days, bringing in more than ten million euros and pushing its way to the top of the German cinema charts. In the United Kingdom, too, the film made it to the top of the cinema charts on the opening weekend and marked the second best film release of the year with grossing £ 12.32 million , the equivalent of around EUR 13.85 million. With around 630,000 viewers and sales of 6.5 million euros, the film also dominated the German cinema charts on the second weekend, while in North America it was fourth in the cinemas on the extended Thanksgiving weekend with box office earnings of 42.9 million US dollars -Charts landed. In the third week the film lost the top position in German cinemas and was able to achieve second place with 385,000 cinema tickets sold. The worldwide revenues of the film from theatrical screenings amount to around 653.76 million US dollars, of which it was able to gross 159.56 million in the North American area alone. As a result, it is ranked 10th among the most successful films of 2018 .
