Saint-Marcouf is a commune with 341 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Cherbourg and the Canton of Valognes . The inhabitants call themselves Saint-Marculfiens .

Saint-Marcouf is located on the east coast of the Cotentin Peninsula on the Seine Bay of the English Channel . Adjacent municipalities are:

The municipality is part of the Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin Regional Nature Park . The Îles Saint-Marcouf archipelago , which consists of the two islands Île du Large and Île de Terre , is located about six kilometers off the coastline . Despite their name, administratively they belong to the municipality of Ravenoville.

Toponymy

Born in Bayeux , Saint Marcouf was a monk who founded the Nanteuil Abbey. It is believed that this abbey was in Saint-Marcouf.

history

The German battery of Crisbecq was not far from Utah Beach . Crisbecq is the name of a stream. The liberation of Saint-Marcouf from German occupation in World War II took place on June 8, 1944.
