The core of the settlement is the historic street market, which stands out clearly from the loose buildings in the rest of the settlement area. A stork's nest on a disused brewery chimney in the town center has also become famous . The Karlstein Castle (1393) and the ruins of Forstenberg Castle (around 1200) are located in the district of Karlstein (1393 ).

history

middle Ages

In 970 Regenstauf was first mentioned as a place in records. The name means "Burgberg am Regen", after the Old High German stauf / stouf for a pointed, cone-shaped mountain. In 1196 Regenstauf came into the possession of the Duchy of Bavaria . In 1326 Regenstauf was raised to the market.

The coat of arms of the market, awarded in 1470 by Duke Albrecht IV of Bavaria , shows two crossed fish as a symbol for the river under a colorful rainbow . In 1563 the district of this brook became noble seat. During the Thirty Years War, Swedish, Imperial, Austrian and Bavarian troops were in Regenstauf from 1633 to 1646. The witch trial against the owner of the Eichmühle, Anna Bayer, took place in the Heilinghausen district in 1686 .

The famous Sebastian Chapel was built in 1713 and 1714. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was in Regenstauf in 1786, his Italian journey begins in literary terms on the first pages from Karlsbad via Regenstauf.

Modern times

On May 1, 1906, the night train Munich – Berlin ( D-Zug 21) was involved in a rear-end collision at Regenstauf. Due to a wrongly set point, he ran into a freight train that he was supposed to overtake. A prominent passenger on the train was Thomas Mann , who dealt with the events in the story The Railway Accident - published in 1909. “The large Maffei express tractor was blown in two. Price seventy thousand, ” wrote Mann in the story.

In 1918 the English writer David Lindsay visited the Regenstauf market and, among other things, visited the observation tower on the top of the Schlossberg. Impressed by "the mystery of the tower" and the tremendous effort in conquering the many steep steps, Lindsay immortalized the tower in the last chapter of his famous planetary novel A Voyage To Arcturus . The tower with its windows, its inner and outer appearance is described in Lindsay's book point by point based on the real model in Regenstauf.

In 1924 Maximilian Marquart donated Baron von Pfetten a benefit for the Heilinghausen district for eternity. Regenstauf has been affected by suburbanization since the second half of the 1950s . Lively residential construction began, which in the following decades made the village primarily a residential area near Regensburg . In 1961 the Brüterei Süd GmbH & Co KG Lohmann Broiler Hatchery set up shop here.

In 1976 eleven urn graves from the Celtic era were discovered and excavated in the district of these Bach. In 1982 there was a fundamental upswing in the village with the redesign of the through-road after the motorway bypass was completed. A town hall was rebuilt, the old town hall was converted into a cultural center in 1997.
