Urban settlements by population

There are 1,105 municipalities ( Municipios ) in Colombia . The municipalities - the largest is Cumaribo with 65,674 square kilometers - partly have the area of German federal states (for comparison: Bavaria 70,550 square kilometers). They usually consist of several localities. The administrative area often includes both the central, mostly urban settlement that gives it its name, as well as the surrounding greater region, i.e. extensive rural areas.

The following table contains all urban settlements (Localidades Urbanas) that had more than 100,000 inhabitants at the 2018 census, as well as the results of the censuses (VZ) of the Departamento Administrativo Nacional de Estadística (DANE) since 1951. The higher-level administrative unit ( Department ) to which the municipality belongs. Bogotá forms its own capital district and does not belong to any department. The population figures refer to the respective urban settlement in the narrower sense - the core city - not to the municipality in the political sense.
